Hotels in Memphis?

Our group is rolling to the Ole Miss/Bama game, and since Oxford has not yet learned that having hotels in their city does not violate the Ten Commandments, we have decided to stay in Memphis.

What are some good hotels to stay at in memphis? would you recommend staying downtown?

Always stay at the Madison in downtown Memphis. Nice hotel and not too far a walk to Beale Street.

Another option would be to stay at one of the casinos in Tunica, MS. Driving time to Oxford is essentially the same..

The wife (an Ole Miss grad) and I might be making a game this year -- I've never been -- and I've heard over and over and over that if you stay in Memphis, which you almost have to, watch your *** EVERYWHERE. Even near Beale Street things can get a bit dicey.

i stay in memphis a lot for work, but i work for hilton and we don't have anything downtown.

the hilton memphis is pretty nice. the rooms are redone as is the lobby area. it is really pretty much germantown though. it's pretty far east. i've also stayed at the embassy suites which is new and standard ES. free internet.

i would second the tunica idea if you have any gamblers in your party. short drive.

No love for the Peabody? It has a great lobby/lounge, beautiful rooms, is walking distance to Beale, and best of all -- is directly across the street from Rendesvous, the Mecca of Memphis ribs.

Is The Commodore Hotel an option?

Dixie Chicken
by Lowell George

I’ve seen the bright lights of Memphis
And the Commodore Hotel
And underneath a streetlamp
I met a southern belle

Well, she took me to the river
Where she cast her spell
And in that southern moonlight
She sang this song so well

If you’ll be my Dixie Chicken
I’ll be your Tennessee Lamb
And we can walk together
Down in Dixieland
Down in Dixieland
Well we made all the hot spots
My money flowed like wine
And that low-down southern whiskey
Began to fog my mind

And I don’t remember churchbells
Or the money I put down
On the white picket fence and boardwalk
Of the house at the edge of town

Oh, but boy do I remember
The strain of her refrain
And the nights we spent together
And the way she called my name

If you’ll be my Dixie Chicken
I’ll be your Tennessee Lamb
And we can walk together
Down in Dixieland
Down in Dixieland
Oh, well it’s been a year since she run away
Guess that guitar player sure could play
She always liked to sing along
She’s always handy with a song
Then one night in the lobby
Of the Commodore Hotel
I chanced to meet a bartender
Who said he knew her well

And as we handed me a drink
He began to hum a song
And all the boys at the bar began to sing a long

If you’ll be my Dixie Chicken
I’ll be your Tennessee Lamb
And we can walk together
Down in Dixieland
Down in Dixieland

It used to be a Best Western, but less than a week ago the wife & I had to make a detour into Memphis on our way to Virginia (had to stop @ Bank of America).

I doubt the Peabody would a) have something in their price range & b) tolerate the drunken madness that is this krewe.

I don't recall the name, but the former Best Western is on the R side of the alley that houses the Rendezvous; Holiday Inn on the L side of same alley.

Walking distance to Beale was 3 blocks, ducks were across the street. There's a Denny's on the corner & it was a great time when we stayed there last year over the 4th of July.

That said, y'all are probably going Tunica so this was a PSA for no real reason other than to say I've been to Memphis recently.

i went to memphis for business a few weeks ago, and i think i stayed at the marriott? it was nice, and right on the rail line that takes you to beale street. good setup.

Give the Talbot Heirs a try. It's right across the street from the Peabody and a block and a half away from Beale Street. The rooms are great - they're just like one bedroom apartments and they stock the fridge for you, plus the prices are comparable to or cheaper than the Peabody.

Watch out though, the hotel tax in Memphis is 16%!
