Hotel in Playa

I'm looking for a place for about 12 girls to stay in Playa Del Carmen in July. We're on a budget, but also want something fun/nice. It would be awesome if we could find some suites/villas where more people could stay in one room with a living area or something. Thanks in advance! Also, I don't think we want to do all-inclusive unless it's really nice, which appears to be out of our price range (i.e. the Rui hotels)

It depends on where you want to be. Beachside is more expensive and noisy. On or north of 5th is cheaper and quieter. You'll have to spell out what you're looking for.

It looks kind of like it's mid-season... not the highest prices but not the lowest, either. I fully expect it to be really hot, all the more reason to consume frozen beverages and lay in the pool. It can't be that much hotter than Houston/Austin at that time.

playa isn't big. everything is within walking distance unless you hole up in playacar. you want to be on or near 5ta avenida. the beach is two blocks away anyway.

in my opinion, the closer you are to the intersection where the glass bar, mosquito blue and hotel deseo is the better.

I've never been to Playa, but we're also planning a trip for this summer with our family. I've had good luck with VRBO, so I'd check into condos and villas with them. Also, in addition to playa.info, I'd check out the reviews on Tripadvisor. Shangri La Caribe seems pretty popular and is on what is supposed to be the best stretch of beach, although I've heard it may be closing this year. Next door is Pueblito Escondido which is a brand new condo place that I've been considering. It's right near two of the most popular beach clubs, which might be a popular place for your group, plus it has its own pools, including private plunge pools if you spring for the penthouse condos.

You mentioned hanging at the pool and no all inclusives. There aren't a whole lot of nonAI's with pools. The 2 I'd recommend are

It's not cheap, but it's an awesome hotel.

Cheaper and still very cool is La Tortuga.

If you are interested in villas/condos there are tons to choose from. We are staying in a condo in Playacar that sleeps 6 for $1200 a week in May and June.
They also have some houses in the area that sleep 8-12. Playacar is $5 cab to town and about 5 minute walk.
In Playa take a look at Playa Maya, Hotel Illusion which are both on the beach.
Playa.info and locogringo.com both have tons of info. Book direct and get a better rate.
