HORRIBLE HORRIBLE COACHING

I'lll be the 1st to say that Augie has credit, but jesus, these were horrible decisions tonight. The pitching decisions along with the decisions to pull your best hitters is thoughtless. Especially seeing how many f'ing games Texas has had to be in late. It almost burned Texas against Army, and it sure as hell burned them tonight. And to see how our "defensive specialist right fielder" played that last ball, I'm speechless.

HORRIBLE COACHING, but at least it's a 2 of 3 series. Maybe we'll make better coaching decisions tomorrow.

We lost because we put the tying run on with a walk in the 9th and then couldn't get a timely hit when we needed it.

You don't throw a curve ball to someone who is swinging late. You bust them inside like LSU did at the end. Baseball 101

Augie didn't throw the ******* ball into center field, and Augie didn't throw six straight balls out of the pen. I don't agree with all of Augie's decisions tonight, but it was far from being his fault that we lost. That game should have been over in the ninth.

Fact is, Texas isn't going to beat LSU with Tim Maitland and Kevin Lusson batting in the clutch. Unfortunately the bat was taken out of the hands of some of our best hitters. This loss hurts badly. The Horns absolutely gave this game away. However, if there is any team that can come back from being in a hole against LSU it's TEXAS!

Typical knee jerk reaction after a loss. We may not win the next two games, but pretty much everything we've achieved this year has been because of Augie Garrido. This is a team with very little MLB talent, and we have found a way to reach the Championship Series. And if we do go on to win the CWS, we'll be able to thank Augie for that.

You'd think after BC, Army, TCU, Southern MIss and ASU that our fans would learn not to doubt this team.

Not to mention Maitland misses the cutoff man on the throw from left in the top of the 9th...not that they would have had much of a shot anyway, but that removed any chance.

Either way, the defensive replacements definitely did not pan out tonight

Whoa, tap the brakes a little fella.

Sure, Augie made some questionable decisions, but what really hurt us is the fact a few of our relievers were not able to hit the strike zone even if Shaq was at bat. Jungman looked especially nervous in relief this time.

Besides we were due after dishing out so many heartbreaking defeats.

Hindsight is awesome. Its never been wrong.

If Jungmann came in and struck those two guys out, y'all would be bitching about why he left Wood in so long...

"Baseball is cruel. It's a statistical nightmare, where there are more variables than Vegas... Then throw in 18 year old dealers."

Post game press confeence quotes:

Chance Ruffin - "I did not come out of the game because of cramps. I was not asked how I felt. It was not my decision to come out"

Augie - "I did not manage the pitchers well. I put Jungmann in a position he was uncomfortable. It is not his fault, it is mine"

Personally, I will take Augie Garrido over anyone. Bottom line, the LSU experience from them being here last year & their talent to take advantage of our mistakes was the difference. I thought the biggest mistake of the game was the second baseman breaking toward second to cover with a runner on first and being out of position for a double play grounder that was a single. Shortstop had coverage. Mitchell followed with a triple to tie the game.

(I do not have a link. but the post game press conference is broadcast as part of the game by Craig Way.)

Augie made the same substitutions that he has always made tonight. I can say that I have never liked it though. It caught up with us tonight. As for me, I would leave in my bats against a team like LSU. If Keyes can field in the first 8 innings I suppose he can field in the 9th as well. I don't blame Augie, I think he gets these kids in to get them experience for the future. But, I wouldn't do in this series.

As for pitching, Jungman got screwed a little bit. Several close pitches the umpire didn't give him that he gave others. His strike zone on the outside corner to righties was never consistent. Not an excuse, just an observation.

Overall, our guys stood toe to toe with Goliath. All he did was win round 1.

We will win the next 2, so everyone relax. And we will win them in classic fashion.

Driving home from the game this evening with friends who seldom check Hornsfan, that the chats will rage tonight. Seems that is happening.

My view: Augie/Tommy/Skip took a lot of chances this evening and most of them turned out bad. We have been living on the edge throughout regionals/supers/CWS. Sooner or later your are going to get bit.

After the fact, it is easy to challenge pitching/fielding changes (many of which I disagreed with at the time) that have been discussed above.

We'll be here tomorrow in the sun doing our thing and hopefully pull this thing out.

RDGP65 - Did you have a view of Maitland's throw to the cutoff man in the 11th? Would it have been close if the throw did not miss the cutoff man?

My question is simple. Does everyone thing this was the year we were aiming towards? The reason I ask is Garrido is 70. Win or lose versus LSU, with his DUI last winter, etc., is there reason to think he steps down after this season? If so, any guess to who the next HC might be? I'd guess the Rice HC if he's much younger at all. I know our young arms will be back, I'm not sure about our hitters. If in fact this was the year we were aiming towards, then I'd guess Augie steps down. Thoughts?

While things got turned to make us regret Augies decision to pull the hitters for defense and to yank Ruffin early, etc. We win last night if we have Huston Street. We don't and LSU does possess a reasonable facsimile. I think our frosh pitchesr finally looked like they were overcome by the moment. I'm hopeful Jungmann can shake off the neves and quit over-throwing tonight, or we hand the trophy over to LSU. This Texas team has no business losing when we score 6 runs, right? Blame Augie if it makes you feel better, but it wasn't like he went down without a fight. It was just a case where three bullpen pitchers poured gas on the fire and had a crushing inability to throw a strike. That'll cost you every single time.

I do not profess to know much about baseball. Plus, I had to be in and out of the room a little during the game. But the questions are obvious. Why was Ruffin pulled out so early, when doing such a magnificent job? I just need the explanation, and I'll be okay. If someone is that good, why do they leave, barring injury? It's baseball 101, I guess, but can someone take the time to explain it too me. Then I look around, and Austin Wood is being pulled. Was he just not pitching well enough that he had to go?

Then, I look up in the 9th, and where are Keyes and Modenhauer? I've read something about them being pulled in favor of other player's defense. Is their defense that horrible? Because we sure needed their hitting there toward the end.

If you know the reasons for these things, help me learn a little baseball theory.

Ruffin looked liked he needed to come out, and then when he was gyrating on the bench while the coaches were working on him you could tell hew as having cramps. Whether or not he could have pitched more I think it was the right decision to put Wood in at that time.

In the 9th Wood was rolling but he got a base runner on. Before hand I told myself if that happened they might need to put Taylor in to close it out. They did and I thought I was a genius in my head. Then afterwards I should have listened to my friend who said leave Wood in and don't put somebody cold in. It was a good decision at the time but in HINDSIGHT they should have left Wood in.

But the hitting just went away after the 7th inning. We get a HPB in the 9th and a sacrifice to move him over but couldn't get a hit after that. I don't think we got a hit those final 4 innings. The pressure was on our relief pitchers those final innigs but we couldn't get a hit to put any pressure on theirs.

It is a hard loss to swallow. In the end we had our chances. Perhaps they are just the better team. I hope not.

I applaud Augie for admitting he made a mistake in putting Jungmann in that situation. Wood is technically the closer, but lately he also has been the 1st out of the pen. Tough for a closer to go 3 + innings. I just wish we could have made LSU pay for putting their closer in so soon. Maybe he will be tight tonight.

I think that we all know that Augie isn't a conventional coach. He goes with his gut and most of the times it works out. It didn't last night. But, today is another day.
