Kansas is 2-6 in Big 12 play. They are 2-2 at home and 0-4 on the road. Texas is 5-3 and have a 3-1 conference record at home. The Horns are riding a 3 game winning streak while Kansas is 1-2 in the same stretch, including two road losses.
The Jayhawks have had four players start all Big 12 games: Danielle McCray (#4, 5-11 Jr. G/F); Kysten Boogaard (#14, 6-5 Soph. C), Ivana Catic (#3, 5-8 Sr. G), and Nicollette Smith (#24, 6-2 Soph. F). Sade Morris (#20, 5-11 Jr. G) has started all six games she has played in, including the last three. LaChelda Jacobs (#00, 5-10 Jr. G) has started the two games that Morris has not. The Jayhawks have a nine player rotation with eight averaging at least 14 minutes and another 9 minutes. They have three players averaging over 30 minutes a game: McCray (36.5 mpg), Morris (31.5 mpg) and N. Smith (36.9mpg). Kelly Kohn (#2, 5-9 Jr. G) and Aishah Sutherland (#1, 6-2 Fr. F) are the other players in double digit minutes. Porscha Weddington (#34, 6-1 Jr. F) averages 9 minutes a game.
McCray leads KU in scoring with 20.6 ppg (second in conference play). Morris is second on the team with 10.5 ppg. They are the only two Jayhawks in double digit scoring in conference games. Boogaard leads the team in FG% with 53.2% on 25-47. Morris (47.8%, 22-46) and Jacobs (46.9%, 23-49) are second and third percentage wise. McCray has taken 148 of the 389 FGs the Jayhawks have attempted in Big 12 games. That’s 38% of the total FGs KU has taken in conference. She has made 62, almost three times more than any other Jayhawk. McCray is 13-30 (43.3%) from BTA. Those 30 attempts represent 41% of the threes that KU has taken in conference play (79). Her 13 makes from BTA are over 50% of the 25 3s KU has made. N.Smith (7-24, 29.2%) and Kohn (4-11, 36.4%) are the next two main threats from BTA for KU. Boogaard leads the team in rebounding at 6.4 rpg while McCray comes in second at 6.0 rpg. Jacobs (21 assists) and Catic (17 assists) are the top distributors. McCray, at 5-11, leads the team in blocks with 8 in conference play. N. Smith is tops in steals with 14 while McCray has 10.
Kat leads the Horns in scoring with 14.1 ppg while Brit adds 11.6 and Ashleigh 9.6. The FG attempts are fairly spread out with Brit taking 85, Kat 77 and five others having taken at least 50. Ashleigh’s 57.4% on FGs tops the squad. Of the ten players averaging at least 15 minutes per game, 3 are at 40% or better, and none of the others is making less than 36%. Both Kristen and Aubry are at 50% from the field although neither has taken more than eight FGs in conference play. Kat (18-43, 41.9%), Brit (10-29, 34.5%) and Ashleigh (6-8, 75%) are the top 3pt shooters while Erika (5-18, 27.8%)_and Carla (3-11, 27.3%) are threats from BTA. They are averaging over 37% from BTA for the season. Kat (27-33, 818.8%), Brit (17-23, 73.9%), Carla (11-21, 52.4%) and Gayle (11-21, 52.4%) have all gotten to the FT line at least 21 times during conference play. Kat/s 7.8 rebounding averaging in Big 12 play nearly doubles Brit’s 4.0 average. They are the top rebounders for the Horns in conference games. Carla has 44 assists (third in league play) with three other Horns having at least 10 assists. Lindsey and Gayle are one and two on the team with 15 and 13 blocks, respectively. Ashleigh has 16 steals (6th in the conference) to lead the team. Carla adds 11 while three others have between 9 and 8 steals.

The teams are at opposite ends in most conference categories. The Horns are in the top four in scoring (2), scoring margin (3), 3pt FG% (2), 3pt FG% defense (4), rebounding offense (4), rebounding margin (4), blocks (2), assists (2), steals (2), turnover margin (3), assist/turnover ratio (4), defensive rebounds (4), and 3pt FGs made per game (4). The Horns 5600 average attendance is fifth in the conference.
Kansas is ninth or worse in the following: scoring (10), scoring defense (9), FG% defense (11), rebounding offense (11), assists (11), turnover margin (12), assist/turnover ratio (11), offensive rebounding (10), defensive rebounding (9), and 3pt FGs made per game (11). Their average home attendance of 3779 ranks ninth in the conference.
They have had four common Big 12 opponents: Texas Tech, Nebraska, A&M, and Colorado. KU has lost to Tx Tech, A&M and Nebraska. Both have beaten Colorado and lost to A&M. Texas has gone 1-1 against Tech and beaten Nebraska.
Nebraska does appear to be playing at a slower pace than Texas favors. The player they had counted on playing PG for them this season, Angel Goodrich, suffered an ACL tear before the season started. McCray has been a do-it-all for them with Morris providing help. As with OSU and Riley, McCray may get her points but the rest of the team may have difficulty in providing support. Given what we saw in the OSU game, I would expect that Ashleigh would draw the initial assignment on McCray with Brit on Morris although they could flipflop. Certainly there will a lot of switching by the Texas defense as the game progresses. McCray and Morris are the primary scorers for KU. Boogaard and N. Smith will match up well height wise with the Horn post players. N. Smith and Kat are likely to match up at the start. Both like to shoot from BTA and rebound well although I have to Kat the edge in both areas by a healthy margin.
This should be an easy win for the Horns, assuming that they come to play and don’t take the Jayhawks lightly.
