Awesome news – Ashley Engle is playing volleyball!

I saw a press release in May saying she had joined the U.S. Women’s National Training Team for a while. Then I hadn’t seen any news.

I wondered if she’d play on the beach, since she’s a natural there as well as indoors. Unfortunately the AVP managed to do a face plant and just splattered itself in mid-August. Nice timing, I thought, for one of my all time favorite players.

Anyhow, someone tipped me to an Engle tweet that she’s playing in Azerbaijan. Which I think is where Borat is from? Wikipedia informs us that the main city, Baku, is on a peninsula in the Caspian. Sounds cool.

Even better, apparently they have awesome volleyball. Nicole Davis is a libero on the U.S. national team and silvered in China; she plays for a club there called Lokomotiv Baku.

Former National Team member Angie McGinnis plays there with a team called Igtisadchi, and quoted in an interview “It's an up-and-coming league. We have eight of our national team players signed there this year. There's a lot of money there so that's where everyone seems to be headed." Other national team players who have or are playing there include Cheryl Weaver, Tayyiba Haneef-Park, and Kim Glass.

Rock on Ashley! Sounds like a good place to tune up until Hugh wakes up and makes the right move.

I suspect everyone knows that Lauren Paolini and Destinee Hooker are with the U.S. National team already. Hook ‘em!

In other news, Jenny Andrew is an assistant coach with Virginia, and has been blogging:The Link

Since she’s way classier than me, she didn’t mention the one huge down-side; having to put up with the sight of former UT assistant coach Ted Wade’s blindingly white, shapeless legs on a daily basis.

Lauren Dickson, on our squad this year, played at Virginia, by the way.

Anyone heard of any other ex-Horns? Heather Kisner? Kiley Hall? Brandy Magee?

Agree outstanding post thanks for the update. Wikipedia has Dariam Acevedo playing VB in Puerto Rico & seems to be doing well also.

Michelle Moriarty is living in the LA area and continuing to play beach VB despite the failure of AVP. Earlier this year she represented the USA at the World University Championships in Alanya, Turkey and as I write this she is in Chennai, India for an International Beach VB Championship Tournament.

She has a really cool website:

Here's a nice interview with Ashley Engle on professional volleyball in Azerbaijan (you'll have to scroll down a little bit):
Azerivolley interview with Ashley

Seems like I keep hearing about more and more of the top U.S. players going there, including players from the national team.

Alisha Glass is doing very well with the national team now, and Lindsey Berg is on the team as well, as an experienced backup, giving them an up-and-comer and an old hand setter. But it sure would be nice to see Ashley playing with them in 2012 along with Destinee Hooker, Jordan Larson, Foluke Akinradewo, and the others.

Also, here is an article on beach volleyball, mentioning Michelle Moriarty and Dariam Acevedo, who is playing for Puerto Rico:

Here is a video of Ashley Engle in Azerbaijan.

She's #12 with the team in the blue uniforms and is doing the setting. That team, Lokomotiv, isn't her main team, she was just playing for them this match.

Ashley Engle in Azerbaijan

At around 7:25 is a classic Engle play, she pounds a ball over on two. Also some classic Engle gets.

Saw this on Volleytalk: Ashley Engle has moved from VC Baki in Azerbaijan to a club team in Italy called Scavolini Pesaro.

Scavolini Pesaro

She'll be team-mates with Destinee Hooker again.

So far Heather Kisner remaining with VC Baki.
