Horns-Tech Game Thread

Tech made some defensive coaching brain farts by only rushing three and giving Sam all day to pick them apart bit by bit down the field.

Players with multiple solo tackles

FOSTER (5)
ADIMORA (4)
MITCHELL (4)
STERNS (4)
THOMPSON (3)
BROWN (3)
GRAHAM (3)
COLLINS (2)
OVERSHOWN (2)

Good to see Foster show up but, of our top six tacklers, five were DBs (with 19 solos) vs. only four front 7 players
This is not what you want

When you play a team like Tech that's 3 steps and out it's really hard to get sacks. They don't run much so most plays are done in the back 5. What I didn't like was missed tackles and not getting knocked downs at the LOS. If you can't get to the QB at least get your hands on some balls.

Coburn is getting double teamed and Ossai has had a few hurries. It seems like Graham and Ojomo aren't doing their jobs.

We talked before the game about the dline not getting into the backfield against utep and it looked the same this week. Both opponents got the ball out quick, so...may not be able to scheme and get pressure....but you sure sure should be able to adjust schemes to cover quick hitting routes when you know they are coming. This will be something to really watch moving forward. No pressure in backfield from dline and no successfully defensive schemes to account for quick hitting passing routes behind them spells TROUBLE in Big12.

Yep. I also wouldn't be surprised if Alfred Collins takes someone's job soon.

When Orlando was replaced by Ash the vast majority were ecstatic about changing to a 4 man line. So far there's been no real change. I'll leave it at that.

I would not have walked away

I don't know any of you guys personally, but I'm not sure if any of us would have walked away from that. Heck, I wouldn't even been able to crawl away.

Why? Thet had pressure and were beating the hell out of Sam with a three on five. Sam needed a priest available for last rights every time the ran a stunt.

Seriously, we can't block three Tech DL with FIVE? Someone on staff needs his *** kicked.

Sam also need to quit staying in the pocket if it's pushed from front. On a 3 man rush there is nothing outside. It was bad blocking, but damn. Just spin outside and either run or pass.

Two 4-Stars, Two 3-Stars, and a former Defensive Tackle signee. That's the starting 5......Why does anyone think Texas has this stellar o-line or has recruited well at that position?

Tech did rush 24 times, but yeah, the missed tackles were horrid. Post-game, the suggestion was it was the virus' fault.
Also, last year a DB lead the team in solo tackles on the season (Brandon Jones), and 4 of the top 5 in solo tackles were DBs. In just two games this year, more of the same, the top 4 in solos are all DBs.

I'm loath.to criticize.a college player but we've seen what Okafor can do.
Time to see what someone else can do.

90-95% of the time we only rushed four on D and they had the ball out in 2.5 seconds. I wouldn’t expect much in the way of sacks in that scenario. Now on the final play we brought four, Tech had five linemen and an RB blocking and the route took some time to develop. We chased the QB out of the pocket.
Only bringing four should have helped us out more with regard to the short routes an quick outs. Adimora seemed to do pretty well from what I saw but Overshown seems to still be on a learning curve.

Sam picked them apart with mostly short and midrange passes on the two comeback drives. Tech stuck with a three man rush and didn’t get much pressure. We pushed it downfield and scored twice to send it to OT. Tech was giving up the short and some midrange stuff and Sam took it. The Re_ Rai_ers basically played a modified prevent defense late in the game.

I posted a similar but clearer shot of this in "highlights" .....I'm wondering if that off-ball hand he has amazingly planted in the ground might have helped save him from significant injury.
Incredible either way...

Why did we wait so long?

My own (hopeful) opinion is that Texas was so confident in a win that they fell asleep in the 3rd quarter on defense and because the offense is best in the short and mid range and they did not want to show Ou their stuff in a game they thought they could win going away. The short game was there all game. The long ball was a mess in the third and most of the fourth. With Bijan gone, really gone.

Wish they had thrown short balls all day to every receiver on the payroll like UTEP.

It was also contrary to what Yurcich said he was going to do when hired

I can't fault the offense much. Sam had a good night and we put over 50 points on the board. Maybe our play calling was getting a bit impatient during the 3rd and early 4th quarters, or perhaps we just didn't execute. Even when we're hitting on all cylinders, we won't get a TD every drive.

The short game was there all game.
Yurcich will likely note this in his review of the film, and watch for opportunities to chip away little-by-little in future games (if that's what the opposing D hands us on a platter like Tech did late in the game). An incompetent OC would have muffed it all up in the 4th Q.

Also, credit Sam for repeatedly checking down to the open man late in the game.
