Yesterday, the Big XII bounced the Pac-10. Twice.
First the supposedly depleted Huskers shocked the Cardinal. Who was omniscient enough to give big red their first place vote?
Then – drum roll please - Texas spanked the university of spoiled children. The Horns have now beaten them on pine as well as the sand. Payback, baby!
I love, love, love this team!
The Horns roll out a wayyy intimidating lineup.
* Our middles Lauren and Jennifer are twin 77-inch chiseled leapers who penetrate enemy airspace so much the U.N. is involved.
* Juliann looks like she was hand-carved by Zeus and placed on earth solely for destroying pretentious Pac-10 volleydogs.
* Destinee soars out of the pipe and screams up over the left side like a supernatural being, hell-bent on humiliating potential blockers.
* Future AVP volleyball goddess Ashley deceptively jukes and alternatively pounds, displaying the all-around skill set that will one day land her on Letterman.
* Heather looked buff, like tempered steel, and her strong play showed why she merits the coveted black jersey.
* And new setter Michelle 2.0 was living the sweet life, as in her first college game she led the squad to a sweep of the number 4 team in the land. Bonjour!
Seriously, that was an awesome match. OK, OK, some rust here and there. But still, this team has the potential to be very, very good this year.
The performances of Kocher and Kisner alleviated any anxiety over the departure of their talented predecessors. Jen Doris is showing signs of becoming the kind of tower of power that can fill the void left behind by Brandy. And Lauren, Juliann and Destinee are showing the benefits of having trained with the national team.
USC was bamboozled at times, especially by our block. Triple blocks, double-blocks. Swing blocks. Haley abruptly pulled the slightly-pudgy Carico several times, and juggled other slots. But to no avail, as his team was more off-balance than ours.
Some of my favorite plays:
* After Alex Jupiter lucked out and aced Engle, Ashley aced her back – twice! You do not mess with Ashley.
* Those blocks by frosh Rachael Adams for set point #1, and again late in set 3.
* Faucette’s crush down the line in set #1.
* Kocher’s quicks to Lauren – and her D – and her dump.
* Those balls Ashley pounded on two.
* Any of Heather’s fantabulous 22 digs.
Hoping to see: some Kiley, some Liz Graham, and some Amber.
And some of those metaphysical digs that Yogi can apparently make.
Running to dinner now – tomorrow should rock! Go Horns!
