BabHorn....I haven't had a chance to go to the camps before. When is the best time to go this summer?? If I can only choose a couple of days, which ones do you suggest??
I’m going to the advanced camp June 19-21. I will have to go in the afternoon on the 19th (after work) but will be there all day on Saturday and Sunday. Usually, in the evening on Friday and Saturday, there are some good games. The all star game is usually on Sunday around noon.
But, especially, Saturday and Sunday, I can get a look at some of players we are recruiting. Last season, Odessey Sims, Cokie Reed, and Nikki Green were there. Campers usually rotate between the FEC and Cooley throughout the day.
If you can only make a couple of days, Saturday and Sunday morning would be a good time to go. You will be able to watch some scrimmages, talk to some of the players that are helping out, and watch the all star game Sunday where you get a final look at some of the top players in the camp.
Just found out that a group of us will be having breakfast at 7AM on both Saturday and Sunday at Angie's Mexican Restaurant on 900 E 7th St.,Austin, TX 78702, (512) 476-5413.
Should be lots discussion of the team and the upcoming season for any that want to come. I don't know if I can get up that early. 7am is usually about when I drag myself out of bed so being somewhere at 7am is doubtful.
I made it to the games this morning. Unfortunately, since I didn't make the previous two days, I wasn't able to connect names with players.
I did see Amber Orrange, 2011 player (that Hoopgurlz had a good evaluation of from the Nike Regional Skills Academy in Dallas). The Link
Awesome player!!
2010 Texas verbal, Anne Marie Hartung was in attendance. She has great ball handling skills for a 6'3" post, and great inside offensive moves.
Wish I had more names with faces because there was some awesome talent on display!! Maybe someone that attended all three days may have more in depth information. But, this is all I have to offer.........
There was quite a bit of talent on display during the past three days. While I wish was able to name all of the players that I saw that looked outstanding, I was unable to put a name to a number. However, I was able to find out the names of some impressive players. These included seniors to be Chassidy Fussel of Union City, Tenn; Morgan Reid of Kansas City, Missouri; and Kenesha Harris of Brock, TX. Juniors Brady Sanders of Joshua, TX; Amber Orrange of Missouri City, TX and Megan Shafer of The Woodlands - College Park impressed with their play. Alexis Jones of Irving, TX headed an impressive group of sophomores. Briana Turner and Cienna Rodriquez-Rivera will be in the eighth grade at Cypress, TX. Turner is a post who seems to have a lot of potential.
Several players displayed outstanding touch from BTA to with passing, and rebounding. Fussell stood out from this outstanding bunch. Sanders and Jones seemed to stand out from a very good group of juniors and sophomores. While it would be awesome to see several in Burnt Orange in the next few years, there seemed to be several that will merit the attention of college coaches.
The camp appeared to be well run with lots of instruction in small groups that allowed the instructors to focus on individual players. The games at the end were great, seeing not just the all stars but others get a chance to play against others in their level.
I watched Anne Marie play and she will bring a lot to the Horns frontcourt next season (2010). She’s tall (6-3 or 6-4), runs the court well, handles the ball better than expected (by me, anyway) for a big, and passes well. She doesn’t seem to mind mixing up inside, either. She’s lean and seemed to be fairly strong. Cassie Peoples, the UT 2011 PG commit, was at the camp although she did not participate in the activities. She did a lot of shooting from BTA and showed a very nice touch. Horns are going to be loaded with 3pt shooters in the next few years and all can dribble penetrate as well.
Got a chance to see most of the players, including Lauren (whom I mistakenly called Yvonne when I spoke with her) and Cokie. Kat was the only I don’t remember seeing. I believe I overheard that she was out of town this week. All of the returning players look like they have been working hard. Ashley Gayle and Erica look especially cut. Lots of former players there helping out. Amie Smith (I forget her married name) sounded great when I listened to her working with her squad. She understands the techniques well and knows how to communicate it to players. She looks like she could play 40 minutes nonstop. Her squad had several players that I was watching so I ended up watching her teach a lot. Edwina Brown, Stacy Stephens, Carla Cortijo, and Katrina Robinson were others that I either talked to or recognized there. I think that I saw Nina Norman but won’t swear to it. I doubt that I saw all of the people that came back to help out. Nice to see so many ex players come back to help the next generation learn the game. While the players that have a chance to play on the next level stood out, it was fun to see the others busting their behinds to learn and to get better. There was a lot of intense faces and play out there.
There will be a get together in mid August to kick off the season. I will post more details as the dinner becomes finalized.
edited to correct Megan Shafer's name and add her home town.
Jazz Dorsett, a participant in this past weekend's Longhorn camp, has committed to OSU. As mentioned earlier, there was some outstanding talent at the camp.
thanks for the camp updates jusme and babhorn! i'm excited to see Anne Marie in action...it's always great to have a post player that can handle the ball and pass well.
here's a story on Chassidy Fussell that ran in March of this year. Sounds like a heck of a player who averaged a double double last season (30.3 points, 11.1 rebounds).
