It was a busy week for the Horns volleyball team. They went all kung fu and beat up some Utes. Then they beat down on some Aggies, just about as bad. No, not those Aggies. Some other Aggies, from New Mexico State.
From the box score, looks like the Horns showed the same good stuff we saw in the matches that were televised last weekend.
First off, our block rocks. The front line of Destinee, Lauren and Ashley is especially morale-destroying. Jen Doris and Rachael are kicking butt and taking names, too.
Offensively, Destinee is set to jet, attacking from all over the court. Our middles Lauren and Jen are raging, and the frosh Rachael is showing quality.
New setter Michelle Kocher has slotted in nearly seamlessly, way beyond reasonable hopes and expectations. I know girls who have been to setting clinics from her club; they set balls until their fingers bleed. So Kocher has work ethic as well as talent, and that’s good news for us Horns fans.
Heather has been movin’ and groovin’ in the back row, she laid out for a whole mess of mighty gets against the Cardinal and the Trojans. Her Big XII nod was well-deserved, and we’ll see more of those I think.
And lastly, it appears Ashley is healthy, so her all-world game is on.
But I must say, the loss to Stanford was painful. We coulda, shoulda won that match. For some reason, Juliann didn’t have her mind right. More rolls than a bakery. Where were those wicked strong spikes that get picked up by seismologists?
Depleted Nebraska swept Stanford. Lowly St. Louis beat Stanford in four! So far this season, Stanford’s claim to fame is that they beat us. Argh! Hate it that that one slipped away.
The other worry is the runs we have been giving up. More runs than a tourist. That won’t fly when sets are to 25, and needs to be rectified, pronto.
We’ll know more on September 20th when we open the Big XII in Lincoln. We’re 1-1 against ranked opponents, and Nebraska is 3-0. That’s OK. We have more than enough talent & heart to take them out at home. And last year, Faucette went up to the frozen tundra and dropped the hammer for 20 kills and a .351. If we see old-school Faucette-style pounding anything like that, then we’re gonna have Nebraska on their heels for the Big XII title!
See you at the home opener for our awesome team, and may the good Lord have mercy on those poor Bobcats.
