This will be the first meeting ever between the Longhorns and the Golden Griffins of Canisius. First, though, Canisius had a game on Monday with Lamar before their meeting with Texas. The Horns are 8-0 and ranked #5/6 in the polls. Canisius, a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), is 6-2 and unranked after winning their game with Lamar 57-55. The Golden Griffins bring a six game winning streak to Austin, including three straight on the road. Horns will place their five game home winning streak for this season on the line Wednesday night as well as their 22 game winning streak over non-conference foes going back to the 2013-14 season.
Margret Halfdanardottir (# 10, 5-9 Soph. G) averages 11.1 ppg as the top scorer for the Golden Griffins. Crystal Porter (# 24, 5-10 Sr. F) and Jasmine Mungo (# 20, 5-10 Sr. F) are second and third in scoring with averages of 9.0 and 8.8 ppg, respectively. The top four shooters for Canisius are Halfoanarottir (that’s a lot to put on the back of a jersey) (29-62; 46.8%), Porter (29-69; 42.0%); Tiahana Mills (# 5, 5-5 Sr. G) (23-52, 44.2%) and Lauren D’Hont (# 15, 5-11 Jr. G) (19-50,38.0%). Like Stanford, the Golden Griffins like the 3pter. And with good reason as they connect on 40.1% of their treys. Halfoanarottir is making 53.1% of her threes (17-32). Maria Welch (# 13, 5-11 Fr. G) is the other main threat, hitting 33.3% from BTA (10-30). D’Hont is second in 3pt percentage at 50.0% (9-18) while Mills is third with a 3pt shooting % of 42.1% (8-19). Saliah Serrette (# 32, 5-11 Soph. G) has it 3-4 from BTA. Sarah Cooley (# 23, 6-1 Soph. F) is 2-3 on 3pters. Halfoanarottir and Porter are tied for the team lead in FTs taken with 18. M. Halfoanarottir has made 14 (77.8%) while Porter has drained 12 (66.7%).
Mungo is the leading rebounder at 6.3 rpg. Porter is next at 5.6 rpg. Abby Schwenk (# 25, 6-1 Soph. F) grabs 4.0 rpg. Canisius shares the ball well with four players with at least 18 assists. Porter tops the team with 32. Tamara Miksovic (# 22, 5-8 Jr. G) has handed out 29 assists. Mills has 24 assists and Halfdanardottir has 18. Potter also leads in blocks with 10. Serrette is second with four blocks. Miksovic has nine steals while Mills has seven and both Porter and Mungo have six steals each.
The Golden Griffins have five players averaging between 29.4 (Mills) and 22.3 mpg (Miksovic). Halfdanardottir (28.5), Porter (25.9) and D’Hont (24.6) are the other three in that group. Schwenk, Mungo, Welch and Sara Hinriksdottir (# 14, 6-1 Fr. F) all average in the teens. Halfdanardottir, Porter, D’Hont and Schwenk have started all four games. Mills has six starts and Miksovic two. Mills has started the last six games and Canisius won all six after dropping the first two. Nine players have seen action in all eight games with Mungo getting into six games. Coincidence or not, those six games that Mungo has played in also are the six games that Canisius has won with Mills replacing Miksovic in the starting lineup.
Brooke and Imani share the scoring lead for Texas at 12.9 ppg. Brianna is third at 9.6 ppg. Kelsey tops four players hitting 50+% of their FGs. Kelsey is at 56.8% (25-44); Brianna is hitting at a 55.2% rate (32-58); Sara has connected on 8 of 15 for 53.3%: Imani is fourth in FG% at 52.7% (39-74). Brooke is second to Imani is FGs made and attempted (34-73; 46.6%). Going only with players that have at least 10 3pt attempts, Celina has the best 3pt % at 50.0% (9-18). Brooke is the main threat with 34 attempts (13 makes; 38.2%). Empress (5-19, 26.3%) and LaShann (3-12, 25.0%) are the other Horns that have taken more than 10 3s. Brady is hitting 100% from the FT line but has only taken six FTs. Imani and LaShann lead in getting to the FT line with 31 attempts. Imani has the most made FTs with 23 (74.2%). Brooke is second in FT percentage and FTs made (22-26, 84.6%). LaShann is third in FTs made with 18 (58.1%) while Empress (70.8%) and Celina (68.0%) each have 17 FTs.
Imani (8.9 rpg) tops the team in rebounding while Kelsey is second at 5.1 rpg. LaShann (4.8 rpg) and Brianna (4.4 rpg) both grab over 4 rpg. Horns have three players with at least 20 assists: Celina (27), Empress (25) and Brooke (20). Imani is the top shot blocker with 16 while Kelsey (6) and Sara (2) also help close down the lane to opponents.
Eight games in, the primary starting lineup seems pretty set: Imani (8 starts), Celina (8 starts), Brooke (7 starts), Empress (7 starts) and Brianna (6 starts). LaShann (1) and Kelsey (3) also have starts. Those five all average over 21 mpg with Brooke (30.5 mpg) and Celina (27.1 mpg) putting in the most time. Kelsey joins them in averaging over 21 mpg. Tasia and LaShann are the other two players that average in double figure minutes.
Projected starting lineups based on the last game:
Texas..........Canisius
Imani...........Schwenk
Brianna........Mills
Empress......Porter
Celina.........D’Hont
Brooke.......Halfanardottir
Texas will once again enjoy a big size advantage inside as Canisius’ tallest player stands 6-1. They have three with Schwenk and Hinriksdocttir getting the most minutes. Watching the Golden Griffins against Lamar, they have no problems driving inside, challenging the posts. But that was against Lamar, similar in size. You have to wonder if 6-7, 6-5 and 6-4 for Texas inside might change that mindset.

Horns should dominate inside and will need to shut down Canisius’ 3pt shooting. Coming into this game, a third of their shots come from BTA. That percentage may be higher in this game, both in scoring and on the boards. They are also getting to the FT line twice as often as the Golden Griffins and makes twice as many. The FT percentage is pretty even. Canisius will be riding a six game winning streak and will playing as if they have nothing to lose, which they don’t. Texas needs to play their game and at a high level without a letdown after defeating Stanford.
Hope to see 4000 plus at this game. We came close against Stanford.
Game time will be 7PM. This will be the last home game before Christmas. The game will be carried on the Longhorn Network. Radio will be 104.9 FM The Horn.
