Both teams are coming off road games. A&M got a 60-50 win over OSU while Texas dropped a 89-69 decision to OU. A&M is tied for third with ISU at 3-2 while Texas is alone at sixth at 2-2. The Horns have won two conference home games while A&M is coming off a big road win at OSU. The fight to finish in the top four in conference heats up as the Horns need to defend the home court while the Aggies need a win to keep pace with ISU. OU and Baylor tangle Wednesday so tonight’s victor will remain close to the top.

Below are stats for conference games with rankings in parenthesis while season stats follow.
Even with the battering the Horns took against OU on the boards, they still have an edge on A&M in rebounding. They match up better with the Aggies on the boards and should be able to hang tough inside. A&M is among the best in defending the 3, both for the season and in conference play. This has been a major weapon for the Horns except in their game against OU when they made a meager 2-12 with Ashley hitting one of those two 3s.

In conference play, Kat and Brittainey lead the Horns in scoring at 16.0 ppg and 10.8 ppg. AT is third in scoring in conference play at 8.8 ppg. She (51.9%), Kat (50.0%) and Brit (43.6%) are three of four Horns making at least 40% of their FGs in Big 12 games. Kristen at 60% (3-5) is the other Horns. As in the regular season, Kat, Brit and Erika are the primary 3pt shooters, having taken 48 of the 59 3s attempted. Kat is tops with 11-24 (45.8%) while Brit and Erika are at 33.3% (4-12 each).Kat continues to be the top rebounder at 7.5 rpg while AG has moved into second place during Big 12 play averaging 4.8 rpg. Carla has 32 assists (8.0 apg)in Big 12 play with the next closest at 7. Ashley and AG share the blocking lead with 6 apiece with Kat second with 4. Kat is tied with Ashley for second on the team with 7 steals eacj while AT and Carla top the team with 8 steals apiece.

A&M is led by Danielle Gant (# 55, 5-11 Sr. G/F) and Takia Starks (# 3, 5-8 Sr. G), each averaging 17.4 ppg. No other Aggie is averaging double figures in Big 12 play. Gant and La Toya Micheaux (# 12, 6-3 Dr. C) are the top rebounders at 7.6 in Big 12 games for the Aggies. Gant (54.8%) and Starks (44.4%) are the top shooters for A&M. Gant (2.4 apg) and Tanisha Smith (# 22, 6-0 Jr. G, 2.2 apg)are top Aggies at feeding others for FGs. Gant (82.6%) and Starks (81.8%)are the two Aggies we don’t want to see on the line. They each get to the FT line over times a game. Gant (3.0 spg) and Sydney Colson (# 51, 5-8 Soph. G, 1.8 spg)lead the Aggies in steals in conference games. Micheaux provides defense in the middle, averaging .8 bpg in addition to her rebounding. Gant and Starks each are playing over 36 minutes in Big 12 play.

The Aggies are right there with the Horns in taking the 3. It’s a big part of their offense although they are not hitting the 3 as well as the Horns, especially in conference play where they are only making 26%. With the Aggies not breaking out conference stats, I will list the season leaders for 3pters and games started. Gant and Starks have started all games with Micheaux starting 17 of 18. Colson has started 15 of 18 games. Adaora Elonu (#21, 6-1 Fr. F) has started 12 of 17 games. Others that are averaging double digit minutes for the season are: Tyra White (#20, 6-0 RS Fr. G); Sydney Carter (# 4, 5-6 Fr. G); and Damitria Buchanan (#2, 6-2 Jr. F). Three others that have seen action in most games are: Sklyar Collins (5-9 Fr. G); MaryAnn Baker (#15, 5-10 Soph. G) and Kelsey Assarian (# 40, 6-1 Fr. F). Starks (20-68, 29.4%), Smith (15-41, 36.6%), White (13-44, 29.5%), Colson (14-47, 29.8%), and Carter (12-32, 37.5%) are the threats from BTA for the Aggies.

As is well known, the Aggies like to press and force TOs. They are forcing 19.6 TOs in Big 12 play, second behind Texas’ 19.8 forced TOs. A&M and Texas rank second and third in Big 12 conference games in forcing TOs. Both also give up the ball, frequently, with A&M turning it over 16.8 times in Big 12 games and Texas averaging 17.0 TOs. So who will cause the other to turn it over and capitalize on those TOs? This game could be a TO fest with easy baskets available for both teams off their defense. Six of the top 15 ball thieves in the conference will be on the floor—two from A&M and four from Texas. Another big question is whether Texas will be able to free up their 3pt shooters. If Kat, Brit and Erika can get open looks, they should be able to knock those shots down. But A&M is among the best at denying those open looks from the perimeter. Which team will prevail in this battle? A&M can’t match up with the Horns inside but they have the height advantage in the backcourt. Ashley and Gayle will make it tough to for the Aggies to go inside. The Aggies will make the Horns’ outside shooters work for their shots.

It should be an exciting game for fans. It’s another televised game for both teams to make an argument for post season play. It will be carried on Fox Sports SW beginning at 7PM.

We NEED this game....gotta protect the home court. Go Horns!!

I posted the secret to success in Norman and all of the points were right on. Sadly, it was OU who executed them and not UT. So for the Aggies, I'll take the view of the Budweiser sportscaster guy and predict that if we score more points than A&M we will win. (I didn't know that)

Don't get me started about the foul away from the ball as Carla drains the winning 3 pointer in Lubbock. Let's be waaaay ahead at end game. Free throws ladies, Free throws!

Hook 'em Horns!
