I still think this topic needs to be addressed by the NCAA. Its clearly taunting, a put down of an opponent, rather than celebrating your own team. Its poor sportsmanship, to say the least.
Our fans have become so tittybaby. There was a time in the 70s when other SWC players/fans would do it and we'd laugh it off because we KNEW we were better than everyone else. Not so much in basketball, but football for sure.
I admit that I find it annoying, but it's not a big deal to me. I consider it akin to trash talking and I've always thought that if you don't like what's being said to you by someone, do your best to shut them up.
The OU player that did it right before the Horns stormed back to win in OT probably wont be doing it again anytime soon.
Well then, the throat slash or anything else need not be called on our players. The others are just soft.
If a Horn did the Horns Up in the face of an opponent I fully expect a penalty to be put on them, rightly so. But to just display it, no big deal.
When it's done upside down by an opposing player it is taunting unless that is officially their hand sign or mascot. If they do it to the face of a Horn, it's even more of a taunt.
I dont think its titty baby to wonder why a double standard exists. I think it was around 2003 when, specificly, the language was put into the rules was that a gesture used to taunt was unacceptable while a gesture for celebration if not excessive is permitted. Cedric benson was flagged for flexing his biceps after a touchdown, but in the same game (not sure the exact one) players were alowed to do the "horns down" at our crowd.
If the rule is "no taunting gestures" than there is no clearer definition of taunting than than inverting our hand sign and pumping it empaticly at the ground. I think its got worse over the years now that players are confident that it will not be flagged.
An even more clear example of the double standard was when a Texas player vs TEch this year "reholstered" two imaginary pistols after scoring. In my opinion a very creative and clever diss on the "guns up" gesture. A lot more creative than turning our symbol Up side down. FREAKING FLAG. I went on to coun at least 2 more horns down form tech players that game.
Perhaps it's not called because the officials have sympathy for any player willing to admit in so public a situation that there is a problem keeping it up.
I have mixed emotions. On one hand, the decreasing amount of success is directly proportional to the decreasing amount of horns down gestures. Either it just doesn't bother me as much now (mellowing in my old age), or we haven't had enough success lately for this to be a reoccurring issue (probably the latter).
On the other hand, I've always thought the horns down hand gesture symbolized one's desire to take it up the *ss.
The gesture is irritating, but it's what you get if you're a Horn, so that's fine. But I do have an issue with the idea that if a UT player did the equivalent to another school, they would get penalized (and in Mike Davis' case, they have been penalized).
Taunting Texas may be fun but it shouldn't be institutionalized as exempt from the rules.
As a fan I am flattered when an opposing one does the Horns down. It shows me that they hate Texas more than they love their own team. I remind them of that too.
I do agree that players should not do it and if they do, get a penalty for it. Make your own or do your own. Sorry, mobilhoma, you don't get the Horns down as yours. Stop stealing things.
