You know that expression, “Hey, you can’t hit my kid! Only I can hit my kid!”
I think it kinda applies here. Only the Horns can beat the Horns.
When we’re on, our offense is unstoppable. But when we start up with the errors, we can self-destruct so fast you’d think George W. was in charge. And these 25-point sets don’t leave much room for messing around.
Luckily last night in Kansas the yo-yo was up more than it was down, and we got out of there with a win. Lucky also we had Destinee and Lauren – who ought to be offensive co-POW this week, at least for the Big XII, if not the universe.
These two led the offensive charge in the first set last night, with Pao breathing some thin air and hitting .800 and Destinee superlative as well at over .500. Ashley was quiet, Juliann was still in the doldrums, and we had four service errors, but no matter as the Horns took the lead early and kept it. We were even treated to a Kisner kill! Kansas was held to a bagel on hitting, and the Horns swept to a 25-14 win.
In the 2nd set, the Horns started out on fire. Kocher opened with an ace. Frosh Rachael Adams fired three early kills and Destinee fired five and we had the lead in spite of more Faucette frustration. But mid-game, the Horns started misfiring. Here was the string of misfortune starting at 12-10: Ashley hit one out. Destinee had a service error. Ashley got aced. Yogi got aced. We slowed the skid with kills from Engle and Hooker, but then Ashley had a service error and Destinee had a couple attack errors, and then Ashley was surely infuriated by getting aced again. That’s an ugly streak. We lose, 20-25.
When Pao and Hooker are near perfect, we can overcome a passel of errors. But in this frame, Pao had only three attempts, surely due to passing woes, and Hooker was merely human for half a game.
In the 3rd set, the Horns came out with passion and seized the lead. Lauren and Destinee were back on form and hitting like crazy. Poor Juliann went into the pit of doom at 12-7: got blocked, hit one out, got called in the net, and had a service error. A lesser spirit would have hung her head, but she kept fighting and later notched the set point capper, and even better, carried that momentum into the 4th set.
In fact, she hit .500 in the 4th and a pissed-off Engle was 2-for-2 and Pao and Hooker combo’ed for 9 of 16, and the team played much cleaner ball most of the way. Excellent! Unfortunately at 21-17 the yo-yo dipped down again: Lauren had a service error, Ashley got aced again (she was probably using very bad words at that point), Destinee hit one out but followed it up with a kill, Kiley biffed a serve, and Heather got aced. Finally a surely-fuming Engle got the match point kill, 25-23.
Phew!! A win is a win is a win...
But we’ll need a complete game to beat the very best teams.
And isn’t that what we’re about?
