Horns and the National Anthem

I have noticed (as have others) that the team does not
place their hand over their heart during the national
anthem. Tonight, at the Rice game it was the same old
story but I noticed several more things related to this.
The UT players -- mostly -- bow their heads. WTF?
EVERY Rice player did the proper/patriotic thing. EVERY
assistant UT coach did, too. Barnes did not.
Does anyone have an idea as to why this is?

It is only protocol to have your hand over your heart during the pledge of allegiance, not during the national anthem. People are free to respectively observe the national anthem however they like.

Wow. Even if the "proper" etiquette were to place one's hand over one's heart during the anthem, taking offense to such an "oversight" seems the epitome of much ado about very little.

But, whatever. How terrible of those kids! Especially Wangmene and Balbay!

Personally, I think the song would have a lot more meaning if it were played a lot less often. My understanding is it wasn't custom to play the anthem at EVERY sporting event until the McCarthy Era.

Sad to see Joseph's legacy living on, in any form.

I for one am glad that people care about 'little things' like being patriotic and respectful of our nation and those who serve it. I would call myself old-fashioned but I am probably younger than most posters here who are grads. I place my hand on my heart but do not consider it unpatriotic to stand silently. I do hate to **** when people wear hats, etc during the anthem and possibly hate even worse when Mavs/Stars fans, yell STARS during the anthem. Shut the **** up people it isn't your school song.

See I am not that old fashioned.

SectionThree,

The "right thing" is simply to be respectful. Standing quietly with head bowed is respectful. It is not necessary to place one's hand over the heart -- I don't know how this even got started for the National Anthem. I don't remember doing it as a child. The Pledge of Allegiance, yes, but not for the Anthem.

I'd be more upset if they weren't getting their Horns up for The Eyes.

Speaking of the Eyes, I noticed at the ag game that most people are now getting it right. The hand stays rigid until, "Til Gabriel blows his horn". We lost our way with all the hand waving for a while but seem to be righting the ship.

Actually the correct behavior is to "salute" (Place your hand over your heart) the flag when the National Anthem is sung.

www.usflag.org/flagetiquette.html

"The pledge of allegiance should be rendered by standing at attention, facing the flag, and saluting.
When the national anthem is played or sung, citizens should stand at attention and salute at the first note and hold the salute through the last note. The salute is directed to the flag, if displayed, otherwise to the music."

A citizen salute is to place your hand over your heart.
