Horchata

I had some of this for the first time at a Mexican restaurant in Tucson. It wasn't on the menu, but a Mexican girl that was with us asked for it and they brought it out. It's a cinnamon rice milk and it tastes great.

I've asked for it at a couple of places since then and all I get is confused looks from waiters. Does any place in Austin serve horchata?

I would guess you can get horchata at a good many Mexican restaurants in Austin. I have had it in a restaurant north of Austin before, and I know you can buy it in the dairy section of HEB. They also sell horchata mix.

Chango's on Guadalupe has it.
El Chilito on Manor Rd has it.
Taco Deli (multiple locations) has it, but it's not as good as El Chilito's.
Arranda's on Burnet has a good one.

Any place with "taqueria" in the title has it. I've probably had it at ten or fifteen different restaurants in austin. I think my favorites are Arrandas and La Tapatia. The horchata at Chango's is pretty second-rate.

You know what would rule? A horchata sno-cone.

Vallarta Jalisco (S. 1st and William Cannon) has it and it is really popular too. Everyone seems to order it. I think there is other Vallartas in town but not sure.

if you guys find yourself in venezuela order a chicha*. it pwns horchata.

*the chicha I refer to is the one similar to horchata in that is is made from rice. this is how they make it in venezuela. in other south american countries they are made out of corn or pineapple and are fermented.
