Hoover's Cooking

I saw a thing on Food Network on this restaurant called Hoover's Cooking (I looked and it's on 2002 Manor Rd). It looked pretty damn good and I was wondering if anyone has eaten there. If so, how was it? I live in SA and I was considering eating there on our was through Austin.

Threadgill's on steroids. Amazing food. Bring an appetite.

My favorites:
chicken fried pork chops
catfish
cheeseburgers (unreal)
jalapeno creamed spinach
mustard greens

There's a major difference between Threadgill's and Hoover's, mainly Threadgill's isn't fit for human consumption, and if you actually like your dog, not fit for it either. Hoover's is unadulterated culinary bliss.

Hoover's is awesome. It's about as good "soul" food as you'll find around here and the portions are H U G E. It's got a great location close to campus. Did I mention the portions are big?

Tasty, A+, lots o food.

hoovers is very good. best down-home food in austin. it is off manor & 26th, just east of I-35. their jamaican jerk chicken & chicken fried steak are the best in town. much better than threadgills' (the original threadgill's off lamar is better than the new one from my experience).

I concur with all other opinions posted so far about Hoover's: it's ALLSOME! My fave dish is the meatloaf with mashed taters and cole slaw. Yummy!

As unoriginal as my words are, Hoover's frickin rocks. Plus, I live only a few blocks from it. They used to know my number off of the caller ID. They would answer telling my hello by name and asking if I wanted the usual, Pork Chops, Mashed Taters w/ extra gravy (both sides unless I wanted the spinach). They would toss in a couple extra jalapeno cornbread muffins and rolls. Excellent.

there really isn't anything bad about hoovers. the place serves some great food, and the waiters are some of the best i've ever had.

I think I'm going to eat at Hoover's tonight, I just can not read about this and not desire some good home cooking.

Gary Hoover use to be the Head Chef at Good Eats on Barton Springs. Then for some inexplicable reason the owners fired him, kept most of the same menu, then spent an asinine amount of money to sanitize it for the Barton Creek West crowd. The place shut down operations shortly thereafter.

Damn, you NEVER see a restaurant posted here and EVERYONE speaks so highly of it. Guess I know what I'm doing for lunch tomorrow!

Is it safe to assume Hoover's is open for dinner as well? And do they take credit cards?

And where's the second location?

not sure about the second location, but yes on both credit cards and open for dinner. i've only been to the one off dean keaton, near campus however.

I think it is safe to say that there isn't a second location...and if there is I'd be shocked.

There is a second location in the Travis County Farmer's Market on Burnet. It's small and I think only does catering, although I picked up Thanksgiving dinner from there last year.
Also, on KXAN's weekly report on unsanitary restaurants around town, Hoover's on Manor was unfortunately given a failing grade.

The Hoover's at the Farmer's Market on Burnet is open for lunch but has a very limited menu compared to the one on Manor Road.

For example, they serve no BBQ at the Farmer's Market location. The Hoover's on Manor has very good BBQ.

Anyhow, the limited menu there is part of an agreement with BBQ World Headquarters, located next door. By the way, BBQ World Headquarters at the Farmer's Market is the best unknown BBQ place in town. Excellent lunch choice, give it a try if you are in that part of town.

God I miss Hoover's. There was NO PLACE better to eat Sunday Brunch/Lunch/Dinner than there. Gospel music and 'Gospel-Truth' Soul Food. After football games was the bomb too.

When I visit Austin, I always pick from my list of great mexican places, and if I have time, I'll hit one of the centex bbq joints.

But I ALWAYS ALWAYS go to Hoover's, at least once. I prefer to go twice, 'cause then I can have the chicken fried steak and something I've never had before (try the jerk chicken. mmmm).

Actually Hoover did not get fired from Good Eats he quit because they were getting too aggressive on opening locations and were going chain style by purchasing cheaper food. I guess he was right since Good Eats went in the dumper.
