Hong Kong

I am going over for a bit over a week next month. I will be staying in Kowloon, pretty much the center of it all.

I will be near some museums down at the end of the peninsula and near the MTR and Ferry stops. I plan on going to the peak, hiking that area, markets (staying a couple of nights in Mong Kok) and even found a disc golf course there to play at.

I am probably going to Macau to take some bad beats in Hold 'em since I know nothing about Baccarat, the game of choice over there. There is only one casino in that whole area that has live dealers. The couple of others that offer poker have video tables which are pretty much the wave of the future.

What are some for sure things not to miss? I am able to do this thanks to the mighty and powerful god-like man known as HorninWhereverthehellhehappenstobe. I am an indentured servant to a gracious owner and wifesan. All praise, all hail.

Lostman, you were in HK, right?

Stanley Market for all kinds of stuff that "fell off the back of the truck"

Peninsula Club for a martini at sundown

Conrad International's lobby bar for picking up hot IBM chicks...oh wait, that may have been a one night only special

The peak, absolutely

Train to Shenzen if you have enough time to get a visa while you're there. hit the main market by the train station...window to another world

DO NOT drink the tap water no matter what someone tells you...unless you are looking to drop a few pounds while you're there...it can really interfere with moves on said IBM chicks.

Have fun.

Do I need shots of any sort for Shenzen? I am not against shots, just would need to set them up.

Ty for the Stanley Market, forgot to put that down. Yeah, I am pretty much prepared to buy bottled water everywhere AND take Immodium just in case I run across something or another. I can be quite adventurous and in Mexico and Central America it has gotten me in the past.

Once, at a friends house in Mexico I got up to go to the bathroom. No big deal, all is good. I then woke up in horror as I realized I was chugging water from the faucet like I do at home. I could not make myself puke and well, I paid a price.

Is this because you:

A. Really used this method to lose weight

B. Are a sadist of the bowels

C. The water just is not that bad

D. You are setting me up for intestinal failure for a laugh

the water is clean, but often the pipes are not.

however first year i got sick a few times but now i have adapted to the local environment

I was lookin' at some current photos of Aberdeen the other day.
Absolutely flabbergasted at the change there since 1958.

So all I need to do is either drink bottled water or stay there a year and endure a few bouts of sickness. Tempting, hmmm. I guess I will pick whatever is cheaper.

I was in Hong Kong 15 years ago and the memory is fading. I remember taking the jet foil over to Macaao, eating in lots of good restraunts, the tram up the peak, 10,000 buda temple in the New Territory, lots of interesting markets. You should have a good time there. Stay away from the local water though.

Oh a harbor cuise at night is pretty cool. Lots of great lights across the water in many different directions.

I can't remember the name of it, but there's a bar at the top of one of the buildings on the Kowloon waterfront that has an incredible view of Hong Kong and the harbor at night. Might have been called something along the lines of Sky Bar?

Felix restaurant on top of the Peninsula Hotel overlooking the bay is worth one drink. Philip Staark designed the space. Check out the bar - and oddly enough - the bathrooms.....you'll get it when you see it. Incredible views.

The tip regarding the 10,000 Buddhas Temple is dead on....very cool once you climb the 400 steps to the top.

Spend an afternoon on Lantau Island at Po Lin Monestary.....see worlds largest buddha at 34 metres tall and 250 tons. Only admission requirement is buying a vegetarian meal at the monestary.

I was there almost 40 years ago.

The harbor view from Victoria Peak, specifically as the sun goes down, is what I'll recommend.

We went to Macau on a hydrofoil.

I enjoyed wandering around the streets there more than the casinos.

There's a wharf in Macau, where a bronze plaque identifies that dock as exactly where the British ships that were later boarded during the Boston Tea Party were onloaded with their cargo of tea.

We saw a huge wharf rat as big as a medium sized dog there too.

That giant rodent has doubtless retired by now, but look out for his progeny, maybe even in your stir fried ground meat.

If I don't know what it is when I eat it and it does not make a muffled "woof" when I chew, it's all good!

Thanks for the suggestions, all. I was on the fence about the Monastery but will for sure go. I am probably going to blow off Stanley Market as from all online accounts everything there is more expensive than the other markets and purposely so as a tourist trap. If I have time to kill and I want to watch people get ripped off I may go just to see things. But there will always be something like the Walled Park in Kowloon that I will want to go to again and people watch while eating some fish balls or octopus.

Being Buddhist, or working towards that path I for sure want to see the gynormous Buddha. I look forward to the Veggie Meal. Is it tasty? (those of you that went and ate it)

Smelly tofu. I like tofu. I don't crave it and I don't miss it when I don't eat it but I don't mind it at all. I see many online talking about "smelly tofu" and they say it is really tasty. Have any of you had it? It looks like a good cheap item to eat. Does it smell like jock itch or something like that?
