Honeymoon Recs

Well, Hornfans, I must be an optimist, because it's time to go through this thing again.

As is typically the groom's duty, I've been put in charge of planning the honeymoon. The problem is, I'm a little overcome by indecision. There are a couple of cool cruises around Tahiti that look nice, but that's a long way to go for a beach. I've also thought about Ireland, but she doesn't like Guiness (though I suspect she'll take a liking to Harp). I've thought about Egypt and/or Israel, but I'm not sure the risk of being blown up on one's honeymoon is worth the reward.

So I need help from the collective wisdom of my fellow HornFans. The only guidance I've gotten is that she wants something reasonably exotic (i.e., not North America or the Caribbean). The nuptials will be in April, if that makes a difference from the standpoint of weather calculating into any recommendations.

That time of year pretty much rules out the western Thai beaches, such as Phuket, Phi Phi, Krabi, etc. You could check out Koh Samui that time of year, but it tends to be hot(90's).

Australia is basically a no-go, as well.

Egypt is safe enough. At least the parts you'll want to see are.

Stay off the Sinai and you have nothing to worry about, and probably wouldn't even if you did decide to go there.

You can never go wrong with Cartagena, Columbia.

I would suggest Istanbul and southwestern Turkey, but they might not take too kindly to Americans right now.

I just returned from Greece for my honeymoon in July.

I could not possibly recommend any place better, in my opinion. Other than Texas, it's the only place I've ever thought I actually wanted to live.

I booked it through Virgin Airlines Vacation packages. Really did us right.

Santorini

Mykonos

People are super nice (though a bit stoic in their facial expressions), the historical places are absolutely amazing, and the islands are as beautiful as can be.

Well if you want something exotic, then I would recommend Tahiti, the Maldives, Bali, Greece, Capri, or Morocco. Problem is, some of those will require extensive travel times, which can really wear you out before the honeymoon even gets kicked off.

If you want something a little closer, I would recommend Hawaii or Costa Rica. The latter would qualify as more exotic, since it's not a part of the U.S. and you won't meet a lot of people that have been there. I think there's a Costa Rica thread on here that can tell you everything you need to know.

Also, be sure to visit Trip Advisor to research specific hotels/resorts. You can get user reviews, candid traveler photos, etc. This site has never failed me.

My wife and I honeymooned in Tahiti. If you are considering this do not even think about a cruise.

We stayed 10 nights in Bora Bora. We've been to a dozen tropical beach locales and there is nothing that comes anywhere close to Bora Bora. This may be the premier honeymoon spot on the planet.

Overwater bungalow. Serene beaches. Pleasant French Polynesians. Romance defined.

If we had it to do over we would have stayed a couple nights in Moorea. Don't bother staying in Tahiti proper.

Oh, and save up
