Home Wireless Network

I've been having trouble maintaining a connection to my home wireless network. I've got an HP desktop running XP Home, and a linksys "G" router and nic. The connection will work fine for a while, and then freeze up. The signal indicator reads "excellent," and the transmit led on the nic stays on constantly. The connection does not reset or reaquire a signal, and the only way to restore the connection is to hard reboot the nic (read: pull out the plug). I also have a laptop at home that uses the wireless connection w/out any problems, and the settings are the same. Any suggestions? Linksys tech support has been no help.

I have the same problem with my wireless desktop. I also have a linksys g router and nic. Most of my problem is our phones, we have 2.4ghz phones which is the same frequency and screws up the signal. It still does it sometimes even when the phones arent being used though. I dont know whats wrong either. I have currently got a lan cable running through the hall to that computer because the damn thing isnt seeing the network.

I have had the same problem. Linksys didn't help me so I called HP. They helped fix the problem, but it continued to happen. It ended up being the cordless phone.

I spent an hour on the phone with linksys (India, of course) one night. the chick got to the end of her flipcards, or whatever they use and said " that all I've got- piss off" or something to that effect and hung up. For **** and grins i plugged in an old SMC card and it's worked like a charm ever since. At the time I had a 900 mhz phone, but when I had to replace it I went with the panasonic 5.8 ghz because I'd heard lots of stories of problems with 2.4 mhz phone. Which makes you wonder- how did those genius engineers not the potenial conflict with all the devices on the same freq?

I had problems with my wireless because I was using the built in wireless connection software in XP, When I started using the wirelss connection software that came with the card it hasnt disconnected since.

Is there any way to disable the XP connection software? From the article, it sounds like that could be the problem. I have a client utility that came with the nic.

Thanks for the help, guys, I really appreciate it.

I was told to reset my cable modem when that happens

turn your computer off and unplug your cable modem and linksys, wait one minute and plug back in

I have to do this about 3 times a month, should fix for a week and a half or so.

First, as a general rule it's good to have the most current firmware (for your router) and drivers (for your card). More often than not, I've found that connectivity problems can be solved just by keeping those up to date.

As for XP's Wireless Zero, I have been having those same problems with my new D-Link PCI card and it confounded the hell out of me. Oddly, after disabling D-Link's config utility (it was in the Startup folder) and letting XP do its thing, I haven't had any problems. Since D-Link's utility really only hijacked XP's, I think it was creating some sort of conflict.

This is one way it sucks to be Microsoft, you just cannot win. You have a million companies making a million different products and your software better work perfectly with all of them or you suck.
