Home Theater Questions

I just got a new Sony LCD TV for my den. I also purchased a new Denon receiver and got a PS3 for Christmas. I have a DISH network HD DVR. My question is: Should I run the HD DVR through the reciever and then to the TV via a HDMI cable? What about the PS3? I can figure out the speakers okay but I'm trying to figure out how to get the best picture and sound out of my new equipment. Thanks.

If the Denon has enough inputs, run all the audio and video sources through the receiver. It makes switching between sources easier. There's no audio/video degradation switching HDMI since it's all digital.

Which model Denon? I say yes, it is definitely the way to go. The one I have only has two HDMI inputs so as long as you are going to play DVDs through the PS3 it shouldn't be a problem. Good luck.

The problem you may have is this - some cable/dbs boxes will let you pass audio through another device, but not video (to prevent you from taking video from the box to your hard drive).

I went through this and now have everything running separately which is annoying. PS3 and DVD player to TV via HDMI. Cable box via RGB. Everything separately to Receiver via optical cables...

I guess I have a few follow up questions:

1) Is there any problems with running a PS3 through the receiver as far as video from DVD or gaming?

2) Does the sound and video get "throughput" to the TV when the receiver is not on? I don't always want the surround sound to be on just to watch TV or play a game.

3) Any issues with the DirectV HR20 DVR?

Thanks.

1) I don't see any problem with that.

2) Yes, it will have to be on.

3) Dunno

I'd seriously look @ the Harmony One. I was all set to save money, buy the 880 & live with its known design flaws (button layout, charger issues, etc.), but a quick side by side comparison convinced me that I'd regret not having spent the extra $$ on the H1.
