home theater hook up ?

Ok I have a onkyo HTIB which 3 hdmi hookups along with component and compostite hookups.

I have my ps3 and comcast box hooked into the receiver via hdmi and then out to the tv via hdmi.

I also have a old vcr i wanted to keep hooked up and its hooked up via composite (red, yellow, and white cables )...anyway when i flip over to that input for the vcr nothing happens so wondering if i have to hook it up to the tv direct or that i also have to have a set of composite cables going from the receiver to the tv....

Ie I wasnt sure if something that is composite could be transmitted to the receiver and then transmited to the tv via hdmi?

It should work fine, but I don't think it always does. I may have had a similar problem with an older Denon - can't remember for sure. If your Onkyo has a composite out, hook that to another input on the TV. Also, it might be as simple as needing a different composite cable. I am pretty sure that I have had that problem as well. It happens when there are so many old cables packed away. Another thing to try is switching to component cables if your VCR has that output. Anyway, if all else fails, download the Onkyo receiver manual and read the part where it discusses composite cable inputs.

You will almost certainly need to run a composite cable from the receiver's composite output to the TV's composite input and then switch to the TV's composite input when you want to use the VCR. It's a pretty typical design.

thats what i was afraid of, was hoping the one hdmi from the receiver to the tv did it all with a downconversion for the analog signal...

No such luck for the receiver to do the conversion. It's just a switch for like signals. Perhaps there are some high-end receivers that convert everything to a common output, but most don't.

The newer ones will pass through everything to the HDMI to the TV but not always perfectly. I have an mid line Onkyo that will do this and it's over a year old. AVS forums is a great research tool.
