Home Phone?

Do you have a home phone? Whats the point? Do you have a cellphone too? I was just wondering how the cell phone has changed landline home phones.

do not have a home phone. no reason at all.

i have a cell phone relay for my alarm, which can not be cut (obviously) from the outside. that was the only reason I would have for a land line.

I brought it up because we have not had a home phone in 2 years. We have not missed it at all. Especially with internet calling and cell phones, it would seem that home phones would die but I keep seeing them advertised and for ALOT of money per month. Just doesn't make sense.

I've got one for my alarm system and directv. I'd like to get rid of it though. Can I still have alarm monitoring without one?

I've heard that some companies can do alarm monitoring over a broadband connection.

The latest Directv boxes don't need a landline either.

they basically put a box in your house that calls the monitoring company by cell phone transmission. my company charges about $5 more than std. monitoring for this equipment.

I easily make that back by cancelling the land line. call your alarm company and inquire about this.

it is also better than using a landline, security wise. I had TW phone service, and basically, cutting the cable on the side of the house would disable the alert to the monitoring company.

I never thought I'd ever have a landline. Then I started working from home and a cell phone wasn't going to cut it for conference calls and such, so now I have a single line and DSL.

But if it weren't for the home office, I'd have no need. Pisses me off I had to get it

I have a land line. It serves almost exclusively as a tool to locate my cell phone when I can't find it.

Would love to get rid of my land line. Like Benard I use it mainly to find my cell phone.

Do you get a lot of telemarketers on your cell if it is your only phone?

I have gone 10-12 years with no home phone. Actually, I have a phone line (basic service $12) (no phone connected) for ordering movies on DirecTV. Every one in a while it will flash on my TV that someone is trying to call my home number. But I have not missed it not one time since I basically turned it off.

I have a land line for my alarm as well but it is part of a bundle package that is pretty cheap. Even if I were to get the mobile or cellular alert for the alarm I would keep my land line. My bundle is actually cheaper with it than without it, oddly enough. It saves me almost 9 dollars a month to have a land line.

I use it as a number to give to people I may not want to talk to. I pretty much keep the ringer off and have calls go to the answering machine. Every couple of weeks I check messages. So it is like it is not there, until I misplace my cellphone.

I get almost 3 months off work a year so I use it for local calls during the daytime hours when it counts against my cell phone minutes. In big storms or lots of rain cell phones sometimes cut out. The land line, not so much. But I have not made a long distance call on my land line in about six years. I don't even know if I can dial out like that on it.

preliminary info for ADT...

the cost of the box is like $250 plus $12/month fee. This may not be worth getting rid of the landline.

They are verifying that I can even add the box at my house

anyone else call about this and get similar/different info?
