You know what would be fuckin' awesome? Jeff Bridges reprises Marshall Cogburn, but he plays it as The Dude (who, of course, abides, despite changes in era). It'd be like Donald Sutherland as Oddball in Kelly's Heroes! It'd play to the Coen's fondness for putting a twist on genre pieces.
He'll help a young girl track down the scoundrels who pissed on her father's Navajo rug.
i have to say that as someone who grew up on John Wayne films, and this being the only film he won an Oscar for (although he did other films where he was more deserving, such as Red River), I have to wonder about whether this is a good idea. But the thing is, True Grit, other than Wayne's performance, really was mediocre. Glen Campbell and Kim Darby are steaming piles of dung in their roles, so I can only imagine the acting has to be better. I think one of the things that the Coens do well is casting, so I can imagine them doing a good job with it. For example, I could see them putting George Clooney as Rooster Cogburn and him actually doing well in it.
