is this place really good? i tried it once about a month ago, and i wasn't that impressed. but i left with that feeling that i just got the wrong thing.

so, i will be trying it again next week.

its got a lot of good hype on here, and other places. so what is great here? i am near there at least once a week. reccomendations? there's not much food wise that i don't like.

I can't understand how they are still in business? High prices, six employees behind the counter when I was there and very few customers. State employees are not going to pay that much for lunch and all other customers would have to make it a point to drive there.

What I got wasn't very impressive?

wha?????? hands-down the best cheesesteak in austin. and a huge sandwich with chips and a drink for $7 isn't high - that's the same as t-cloud or subway....

Agree -- far and away the best cheesesteak in Austin. Although I've never been there when the customer to worker ratio has been higher than 2-to-1.

I dunno... not impressed, however I didn't do the cheesesteak.

My saddlemaker bud used to work @ Capitol (is up in Cowtown @ Sean Ryon's now) & he ate there alot; said they had a good soup but I don't recall if it was all of them or one in particular.

Again, I thought it was pricey & smaller portioned.

ok, i shall try the cheesesteak next time. hog island is right by the courthouse so its a convenient place for a late lunch for me, as texas chili parlor has kind of disappointed me the last couple times i've been, and thats really all i can think of in the immediate vicinity (walking distance anyway)

In case you were wondering.......

One of the theories on the origin of the term "hoagie sandwich" is that Italians who worked at the Navy Ship Yard in Philly way back when brought sandwiches from home and they were dubbed "Hog Island Sandwiches"..........."Hoagies" for short.

I work right next to it and have never been overly impressed. Seems extremely overpriced for what you get, but I've never had the cheesesteak. I guess I know what to get next time I get conned into going with a co-worker.
