Hitch mounted cargo carriers

With the growing family, the Yukon XL just won't carry it all any more.

Anyone have any experience with these?

Cargo Carriers

Since the wife just told me we need one, does anybody have any recomendations? Anything to look for when purchasing?

Much cooler than the rooftop turtle. Go with it. Plus, you can strap a cooler to it, pull up a chair and you got a tailgate goin'.

Take this for what its worth....while traveling along I70 through eastern Utah late last month we came across an Envoy that had (operative word) one of these devices. Their stuff was all over the highway. It appears the thing gave way.

In fairness, they may not have installed it correctly or overloaded it. Again, take that for what its worth.

Your stuff is more convenient on a hitch-mounted device, but it is more prone to damage because it seriously decreases your departure angle of your vehicle, and a Yukon XL doesn't have much to begin with. It will drag pulling out of driveways you wouldn't have otherwise thought twice about.

If you go the hitch-mount route, try to find one that kicks up from the mounting point to get your stuff more up in the air. By doing that though you may impede your ability to open the rear hatch so be careful, but a regular hitch device may do that anyway depending on how you load it. One that will pivot like a spare tire carrier would be ideal.

One more thing...becareful to remeber it's there when backing up in a parking lot

We have them at Cabela's. Get a Z-bar to get it higher in the air. And you can get a piece that lets you rotate the carrier up and out of the way.
