Hill-Berts Burgers - Any good?

I've driven by this place a few times and wonder if it's any good. Haven't had the time to stop yet. It's on Lamar just south of 34th street. It's a yellow drive-in type building. Any good?

I have eaten there about a half dozen times over the last three years. Wasn't really impressed with the cheeseburgers, the chicken sandwich was better but not by much. I always got the feeling it was an old Austin establishment that survived by reputation and convenience to the hospital. I pretty much only ate there if I had a 2 for 1 coupon out of a passbook or was shopping at McBride's down the street.

used to live in a condo near there. ate there about a million times, but not in past 7 yrs, so cant vouch for it now. used to love the place. awesome cheesburger, and they have wheat buns. beats the hell out of every fast food chain, but doesnt compare to the gourmet types (chris madrids, cheesy janes in sa).

i like it better than dirty martin's... it's the same kind of greasy inexpensive burger. havent been there in awhile--might go tonight.

I used to live in a few blocks away from hillbert's as well, and i really liked their burgers! No comparison to Dirty's, since the burgers there are char-broiled, but both are good.

We used to have them deliver all the time when I was in school in 1980s, but simply because we were too lazy to get off our asses and get a better burger somewhere else. I don't recall the burger as being anything special.

dirty's uses a flat griddle (like texadelphia). forgot hillberts delivered. that was awesome. what a great idea, wonder why more dont?

Had a double cheeseburger last night and it was good. Not the best in Austin but a respectable one. Hell it is nice to change the routine up a bit.

I just tried Hill-Berts over on Cameron... and got the wings. Ha. They were pretty good, and they had a wings-n-rings combo, 9 wings, and an order of wings for like 5 bucks. Good deal too. Still need to try their burgers though.

went to the one on Cameron on Friday. Decent burger, really good jalapenos on the burger. average fries, I need to get a shake next time.

But with Fran's 1 mile away Hill-bert's won't be getting too much of my business.

I finally got around to eating there. I was up at the heart hospital and decided to stop by. Their cheese burger was underwhelming. I got their onion rings...damn are they salty! Too salty for me. I always give a 2nd chance. Next time I'll get a shake.

Hilbert's is a top 5 burger iin Austin. If you're by the one on North Lamar though, why not take the extra effort to get the best one in town, the Longhorn at the Top Notch on Burnet. Dan's is also quite kick *** (the one on William Cannon beats the one North Lamar), but not as homestyle as Hilbert's. However, Dan's double meat double cheese has a better molten cheese to meat ratio than Hilbert's. But nothing beats the Longhorn at Top Notch. Brick chimney coming out of the middle of the hamburger joint and a man dropping a whole bag of Kingsford as I walk in = kick ***. I have had them all, and Top Notch is Officially Best In Town.

I didn't go up to Top Notch because I hadn't eaten at Hill-berts. I've had Top Notch. It was only okay. Same for Hill-berts.

I've eaten at Dan's 100 times in my life. I don't know of one on William Cannon. I always go to the one on Manchaca and Ben White. And I now go to the one in Buda every now and then.

Dan's kicks major ***. I eat there a lot. I consider myself a true 'que and burger connisouer. But its hard to buy any argument that a griddled burger is better than one over an open flame.
