High School State Championship Manvel vs Highland Park

I remember *when Manvel* was just a bunch of cow pastures on the road to Sugarland. Literally nothing there 20 years ago. Geez how things change.

Kids in Manvel had to ride the bus to Alvin. Not sure there was even a flashing caution light on Hwy 6. It's still part of Alvin ISD, but 288 really opened that area up to development. Ironical that Manvel and Angleton are only a few miles apart on 288, yet both were undefeated when they met last week for the right to go to JerryWorld.

Angleton is practically down by Lake Jackson on 35. Its further south than Alvin. They might both be in Brazoria Co though.

Both are definitely in Brazoria County. Angleton is the county seat. (I live on the north side of Angleton and commute to Houston.) I can remember when there was practically nothing at 288 & FM 518 in Pearland. Also when the Sam Houston Parkway between 288 and US 59 was only 2 lanes in each direction (and also before the Sam was even completed). Brazoria County stretches all the way from about the Sam on the south side of Houston all the way to Surfside Beach on the Gulf of Mexico.

288 caused more bankruptcies than the collapse of oil prices. The development of the 288 corridor and Pearland came 25 years after expected. some of that caused by Mennonite real estate owners in Pearland and Quaker owners in Friendswood wanting to keep "foreigners" out. Some of that still exists. Look at the Pearland airport. Only about 50 feet of runway still exists, but he still owns it - one block over from Main & Broadway.

Brazoria County comes within a few miles of Hobby Airport, and includes Pearland. It's about 20-25 miles from Angleton to Manvel. while Manvel to Alvin is 8-10 miles.

Funny yall are talking about the growth of Manvel more than the game. I told my wife "Remember when we went to Eddies Country Ballroom in Manvel in the 90s the population was about 100?". The hs just opened in 2006 and this is their 2nd time in the state champ game, meanwhile my hs won its last state title in 74. Its not like Lake Jackson isnt growing too but ever since LZ Bryan retired we have sucked.

Friendswood isn't on 288. It's way to the east, between TX-35 and I-45. Not sure how the folks in Friendswood could have had much effect on the development along 288. I've had people tell me that one of the main hindrances to development has been the lack of drinking water. Water rights in the Brazos River are pretty much all allocated and aquifers south of Houston tend to be brackish.

Yeah it wouldnt involve Fwood as most of that area and what is now Clear Lake was owned by Exxon. When NASA moved in Exxon formed a real estate company to help them develop the area. It was called Friendswood Development Corp.

Actually the games have been entertaining. So far, 3 full days of HS championships starting with the 1-A 6-man games. Got 3 games tomorrow!

Phil

Assuming you went to Brazoswood. What ever happened to that LB on your 74 team. I know he went to Houston. I told Neil Caldwell that he needed to intervene and get him somewhere that could develop his talent and promote him.

FWIW, I was at the playoff game in the Dome when he beat PNG 14-0 by returning two INTs for the games' only scores.

Took the wife to dinner came home and found out I missed the ending of one of the best high school championship games ever

I think Fox is going to replay it at midnight so you can record it
Viewing highlights now online that jones kid can play some ball. I saw the 1st half he was getting hammered and kept coming crazy he only has like 4 major offers chad Morris gonna have fun with him in Arkansas. That wr he has looked damn good also

He possesses none of the requisites to get anyone's attention. He lacks size, speed, arm strength. Do you really think Chad Morris wants him, or offered to curry favor with grandpa and the administration?

That said, the kid is a special talent, and most certainly a leader. He needs a coach that can create throwing lanes - that ain't Herman, Fisher, or Riley. He is better at making his reads than either of our QBs now. Laid up with the flu, and I've seen three or four HS QBs in the last two days that make better reads than either of ours. It's called coaching.

Story is Chad Morris' son is on the HP team and bugged Chad enough to offer while he was at SMU. The offer evidently moved with Chad to Fayettenam. Did Chad see $$ from Gramps? Who knows, but he has a defense in that he offered while at SMU.

Kid can play and reminds me of Major.
