I was always amazed at the prices some beans are sold at, and couldn't really figure it out. I drink the stuff a few times/wk, but my wife is a hopeless addict.

Anyway, for x-mas, I splurged and put 1/2 pound of Kona, and 1'2 pound of Jamaican Blue Mountain in her stocking. The Kona was $20/lb., and the JBM was $40/lb.

Out of curiousity I tried some yesterday and I can honestly say the **** is damn good.

What are y'all's experiences with this stuff, and do you agree that there is a notable difference in taste/quality?

Also, are their other "high-dollar" beans to try, and are there any solid source for getting this stuff at better prices?

you can get green coffee beans from sweet maria's the link for a lot less than buying roasted. of course, you will have to roast them yourself, but you can get excellent results with a hot-air popcorn popper. check them out anyway - it's like a virtual coffee encyclopedia.

i once read about a coffee bean from brazil that these beetles eat and then **** out and they sell them for like $80/lb.

I bought some Jamaican Blue Mountain once, and it was even more expensive than what you paid for it. Something like $55/lb.

Either my tastes are too pedestrian, or it just wasn't that great. It seemed kind of delicate. I'd never pay for it again, that's for sure. Nowadays I either buy Ruta Maya at CostCo or go to Texas Coffee Traders and get whatever they recommend.

The beans are important to be sure, but many people screw up theif coffee by not grinding the beans long enough, or storing it in the freezer.

KingKoopa, I know what you are talking about.

The only thing I am not sure about is "whatt" it is **** out of.
I can't remember if it was a beetle, but I know it was something.

someone posted about this before, on this site.

Kona is so so by itself. But I once had it blended with Columbian, and it was a lot better.
Jamaican Blue Mountain is worth every single penny. I usually like strong, dark coffees, but I am now enlightened.
My friend's dad brought some stuff back from Brazil. They became addicted to it when they lived there. I'm not sure exactly what roast it is, but it is DARK, very finely ground, and is incredibly flavorful that I want to crap my pants it's so good.

Yeah, what's wrong with freezing the beans? I've always done this and didn't notice any difference from the first batch to the last.

HA!

There was nearly an entire thread devoted to the storage of coffee some time back. It seemd the concensus was that Refrigeration was better than freezing. thought NOT because of condensation. The thought was that the freezer by it's nature youw actually dehydrate and dry out the beans.

The good **** is good, but paying $40 a pound is NOT worth it to me. Hell I woudl rather buy a good bottle of wine.

To me COSTSO's Costa Rican blend is pretty damn tasty. Hell it's about 6 or 7 bucks for two pounds. Ruta Maya is pretty damn good but I honestly like the Costa Rican blend better.

wolfman,

see the paragraph that I wrote after that. it is in reference to the mammal (weasel, I guess). I think it's called a luwak.

booze hound thanks for the link. I had prior to the other thread always froze the coffee, then switched to the fridge. Back to my first instict I guess.

the link also let me know what indeed that little button was on my COSTCO coffee, the one way CO2 valve!

The critter is a luwak...
