'High Efficiency' Toilets

So me and the wife are adding a third bathroom to the house, it's going to be small and used primarily as a pool bathroom, so we don't really need to pimp it out as far as fancy fixtures. The City of Austin offers a $75 rebate for toilets with a 1.6 gallons-per-flush capacity, but a $200 rebate for ones with a 1.3 gpf. It looks to me that I could get a cheap toilet almost for free if I go with the 1.3, but that seems too good to be true; am I missing something here, is there a big disadvantage to the 1.3?

I'm no plumber, but I eat a Taco Bell enough to know that:

if it is yellow, most will mellow;
if it is brown, it WON'T go down.

If you have to flush 4 times to get it to swallow a turd, then you actually used 5.2 gallons. Other than that I don't think there's any significant disadvantage.

- Not sure about their rebate models.

But the 'free toilet program' will issue a niagra bucket flush unit. Seems like its arount the 1.3 Gal mark.
I have one... solid stuff will clog on a regular basis... for kids, I bet it would be a champ... never will get another one of these units.

Well, from what I'm led to believe the 'free' program mandates exactly the same as the $200 off program, thanks for the info...I think I'll be getting the same 1.6 gpf Toto that I have upstairs....

Since replacing an old toilet with a low flush model, on a four inch PVC line, I have had nothing but trouble. Finally had a cleanout installed so I could clear the line when it clogs every three months or so. Just not enough water volume to move the paper in that big a line. Plumber tells me they work better with a three inch line. So, flush it twice for every three wads of paper, and I might get by, so WTF am i saving. I have noticed that whenever anyone leaves an old toilet out on the curb, someone grabs it immediately. Screw low flush toilets. I'm going to Canada for my next new one.

Go with the 1.6 and get the Toto. Best commode I have ever had. Demo shows it flushing a golf ball and with 1.6. I've never had it stop and I've had users that use tons of paper.

Thanks for all the responses guys, we actually have a 1.6 Toto that rocks...based on all the posts, I think I'm best off buying the same Toto 1.6 we have and just taking the $75...

There are models out there that allow you to half flush for liquids, and full flush for solids. Not sure if they qualify for the HET rebate, though.

these suck ***. They use them in England and you need a brush to wipe up the deuce which prompted my mother to say "they have nicer toilets in mexico"

You will end up flushing twice

However since we are talking toilets I got this one
The Link

The TOTO Neorest Alpha. No be clear, i wouldn't have spent this money unless I had won it or something, which I did playing Texas hold 'em with some mainlanders. I had it and decided to splurge. After going to our offices and staying at the Grand Hyatt Tokyo I could not get it out of my mind. It is truly a throne.

It opens up via infra red and says "hello sailor" actually it says nothing but you get the idea.

Since we're talking toilets, I've got a question.
Mine are VERY noisy on refill. I don't remember them always being that way (10+ years old) but they're definitely LOUD now.
Any suggestions?

No it was $2900. Got it on sale. Additionally as I mentioned I won the money in a card game and I'm renvoting my house so the net buy as probably like 2300 over a normal toilet I would have had to buy anyway.

And it's not just a toilet. It does oh so many more things. Like washing your *** for you and blow drying you. It's marvelous, and don't diss it until you have used one.

The Totos are incredible. I have two of the mid-range model and they work marvelously (no *** washing and drying).

The higher end models (no pun intended) are supposed to be the height of luxury.

Friend of mine redid their master bath and put a high tech bidet in there. It's got a monster remote control where you can adjust the temp of the water spraying off your cornhole, settings for the blowdryer, all kinds of stuff. Really wished I would have given it a spin.
