Oregon State QB Ryan Katz, who lost his job to Sean Mannion early this season, is transferring, the school announced.

Here's the official news release:

Oregon State University head football Mike Riley announced Sunday that quarterback Ryan Katz has requested and been granted a release so that he can pursue opportunities in education and football at another university if he so desires.

Katz, who recently completed his redshirt junior season, is on track to graduate from OSU in March with a degree in business finance. He graduated from Santa Monica (Cal.) High School in March of 2008 and arrived on the OSU campus in time for spring practice of that season. As an anticipated March graduate of OSU, Katz will have the opportunity to become immediately eligible to play the 2012 season at any institution outside the Pac-12 Conference provided that he is pursuing post-graduate studies during his senior season.

“After discussing this issue with my family I have decided to seek other academic and athletic opportunities,” Katz said. “I have been granted my release from Oregon State and I plan to transfer as a graduate student with one year of eligibility remaining. I have considered Corvallis home for the past four years and it's been filled with many experiences and life lessons. I want to thank all my supporters and I look forward to writing the next chapter of my story.”

Katz played in 18 games for his OSU career, starting 14 contests. He completed 239 of 406 pass attempts for 2,722 yards and 19 touchdowns.

“I want to thank Ryan for his contributions at Oregon State and he leaves our school with my utmost respect,” Riley said. “Everybody associated with the Oregon State football program wishes him great success in his future endeavors.”

The great thing about this is he could work on his MBA, obviously he's a sharp guy, learn Harsin's O, lead us to 10+ wins get some serious business contacts. With a little luck, we win 11 with him, he leads us to the NC, and never has to buy a meal again in Austin.

Only downside is he couldn't play in Spring, but who cares, the guy has D-1 experience and has done well, not spectacular, but far better than what we've got now.

If he enrolls in a UT graduate program that his current school does not offer, he can play for the Longhorns in 2012. Same drill for the Notre Dame benchwarmer.

I haven't seen him or the Beavers starting QB play. Is the starting Beaver QB exceptional is why Katz lost his job? If not, then why do we want another back up QB on the team?

I think the bigger risk is alienating Ash/McCoy into another transfer, while only getting one year out of a guy who's basically a Garrett Gilbert redux.

I don't think he's full-time starter material based on what I've seen. He had one miraculous game against Zona last year, but other than that he's quite average. OSU was #94 in total offense with him at the helm. He tries to go low-risk, low-reward with most of his throws, and we already have guys like that on the roster. He's not as mobile as his size implies, and takes a lot of losses rather than throwing the ball away. Other than his cannon arm (which was another GG criticism), there's nothing we really need him for if Brown/Bergeron/Gray emerge like they should.

I say stick with what we've got unless there's another Russell Wilson out there. Connor Brewer will be ample as our #3 man, and we won't lose either Ash or McCoy over signing him.

average for who? this guy completes 60% of his passes, I don't care how low-risk they are, what are Case's/Ash's percentages, about 50%?

And GG completed 59 percent of his passes with similar winning success to Katz.

Our offensive mindset has fundamentally changed this year. We're probably going to stick with the ground game until further notice. So by bringing in a guy to "hold the rope" for a year sends a bad message to either Ash or McCoy or both, and we immediately lose depth at QB (which seems to be a major issue with some of the complaints on this board). It's like Rick Barnes bringing in guys that he knows will leave in a year (with minimal tournament success, mind you), to the detriment of the rest of the team who actually wants to stick around.

We don't need a guy to "hold the rope." We need Harsin to get the most out of what we have until we can successfully recruit and train another badass at QB. By some accounts, Brewer might be good enough to fill that role.

I'm kind of dense on this. By bringing in an experienced starter to play for a year, and to add depth, Case or Ash quits? Where else are they gonna go, didn't they come here to be clipboard holders and work with Harsin?

Ash, for example, he's not good, surely by now he knows this, he needs to work on his skills, long term, he could redshirt, and work with Harsin.

Same with Case, who better to redshirt and work with than Harsin?

If this guy were to not be able to beat out Case/Ash, then he adds depth and
he's getting a great MBA education. I'm not saying he's a world-beater, but he's better than Case/Ash, and if Case/Ash can't beat out this guy, one redshirts, and this allows Connor to redshirt as well.

Bing! just like that we have the depth we need.

And if you get lucky, and this guy can do just a little better than drive the bus, you're winning 10-11 games. And giving Connor a chance to redshirt, which is what we really want.

What is the alternative? Let's say Connor comes in and earns the backup spot to Case. Watching the other night, chances are Case doesn't make it through the year, without at least some injury, Connor has to burn his redshirt on a basically nothing year.

If Connor is really as great as he is supposed to be, he needs to redshirt and then play for four years. Get whoever you want for depth, but I'm saying you're not doing any good by just getting 0 experience depth, when you have a chance to get either a Juco or a D-1 experienced player.

I hope Harsin and Applewhite take a hard look at the kid. If Ash or McCoy feel entitled after this season's performance then we haven't shaken the mindset that led us into this mess in the first place. Either then feel challenged to get a whole lot better or they go away. No need for any middle ground here.

I may sound like a broken record, but wow, just wow, I wrote this before today's interception, weak arm festival.

Frankly, if Case/Ash get offended and leave because we get a real D-1 QB, let 'em!

Honestly, I don't think Case would start for the Texas State/Stephen F. Austin's of the world. I honestly think he was brought here simply because of his brother, a thank you to the McCoys.

I have no clue about Ash, I wonder who evaluated him?

Oh boo hoo. This is a simple case of "at least it will be fresh blood," even if that fresh blood is no better than the guy who started for us last year with deplorable results.

We don't need an average QB for a year. End of story. I'm all for transfers if what we're getting is top-of-the-line. But this is like trying to find the LEGO pieces from the bottom of the toy box and settling for the ones that aren't the right fit. And with a year under their belt, the McCoy/Ash debacle will be nothing but improved.

Consider the epic failure of turnovers from Saturday. Does Harsin learn from this experience and figure out ways to get his QBs to improve? Surely we have nowhere to go but up. Or do we go running to some has-been who got offers from SJSU and Wyoming in the unrealistic hopes that he'll complete as high a percentage as Garrett Gilbert did?

Will the OL be better or worse next year? Because that would have made a world of difference last weekend for Case. Instead of pinning our title dreams on a scholarship for a guy who couldn't get the job at his own 3-9 school, maybe we should work with what we got.

Nothing to get excited about right now, but the staff has at least inquired about a QB from the JUCO level. QB Bo Wallace attends the same college as DT Brandon Moore (East Mississippi CC), is eligible to play Division 1 next year and is likely to be named the NJCAA Offensive Player of the Year. Several school are calling his coach about him right now but Wallace says they have yet to hear from Texas. He mentioned he would "absolutely" be interested. Don't count on anything happening but know that the staff is aware of the guy and his success. I've linked his profile with some stats and also some video from the NJCAA championship game below:
