Duck, perhaps naive of me but I believe that the rant was genuine, albeit very misguided. If it makes you feel any better about Herbie, it's all an act. They get provided scripts to read off the teleprompter, same way as the late night comics all get scripted jokes to tell. None of this is authentic - it's pushed down from management level as to what they all need to say.
ESPN has been garbage for years, even before they became a political operation. They've gotten too big, too influential on sports itself, and have become part of the story, instead of just reporting what happened.
One of the many dreadful things they do is show on Sportcenter, and make a big deal out of, hard hits that result in brain damage to the players. Then the next day have a hand wringing program highlighting all the damage to players, and cloaking themselves and brave truth tellers fighting for these poor players. Then back to highlights of concussions on the nightly show.
The only feedback loop possible is to just not watch it. Cut your cord, don't pay for ESPN. Don't pay for the LHN and the 23-1/2 hours of filler that's on it. Vote with your wallet, and maybe it'll change. Doubtful though. Once an entertainment venue goes one sided political, even plummeting ratings won't change it.
Every year the Academy Awards show gets lower ratings, yet, they seemingly relish in turning off 50% of their audience. Same with the late night comedy bozos. You'd think that with 14 of them fighting for the same leftist viewers, someone would think, man if I was just right wing, or even center, I'd get 50% of the audience that can't stand these shows.
But they don't. Anyone who tried to put on such a show would be blacklisted by everyone else in show biz. So they keep fighting for the same small audience share, telling themselves that their terrible ratings are OK and it's not their fault, it's because there are so many more choices to watch that it's natural that they have half the audience they used to.
I still wonder what old boy Herbie used for the fake tears. Maybe he did the tack in the shoe trick, maybe he put some Ben Gay in his drawers and used that to cause the streaming tears. In any case it's as fake as a 3 dollar bill.
As I said on another post - favorite line from Jaws is "You're not going to be like this on the boat are you Mr. Qunn?". Surely the talking heads won't keep this up for more than a week or two will they? But if they do, Sideshow Bob was correct - kill your TV and take up the ancient arts of conversation. And scrimshaw.
Many on ESPN (almost all) are disingenuous and Herbie is probably the poster boy. But what we saw in the video is likely genuine. It’s probably what he really thinks, and therein lies the issue. Until we are honest and realistic about the issue at hand, we will never be able to address it. And the ruse that ESPN is perpetuating — whether honestly or deceptively — is terribly counterproductive.
People like Candice Owens and Larry Elder (and so many others) get it. Too bad that the general public is being fed poison and that they are consuming that poison readily and willingly. But how can we blame them? When the public is mislead continuously for — years — many will buy in and believe what they are being told as fact. Probably half of the Texas players fit into that category, if not more.
