Help with Windows Fatal Error

I have Windows 98 on one of my computers and when Windows starts up it goes to a blue screen that says "fatal exception 06 at 0000:00000822 has occurred." The only thing I've found online is a problem related to Norton and McAfee virus software, neither of which I have. Anyone have any ideas how to fix this?

And, yes, I know that Microsoft sucks and that I need to get Linux/get an Apple.

did you have any of those a/v softwares at any time? cuz even if you think you've gotten rid of them, those ******** are pesky, they stick around like crabs.

I assumed you were on a different computer to post. I was talking about the error being fatal to you, not...oh, nevermind.

It sounds like one of your device drivers is causing the problem. Have you upgraded any drivers or installed any new peripherals or software lately?

It's been a while since I've been on 98, but I'm pretty sure you can choose an option to boot that allows you to load each driver one at a time (hit F8 repeatedly after a reboot until you get the menu). This should tell you which file is causing the problem.

The problem is that I haven't added any new hardware or software in a while. While in safe mode, I uninstalled a few programs that run on start up (Zone Alarm, Spy Sweeper, etc.) but that hasn't solved it.

Well I took a quick look on my daughter's 98 PC, and I can't get F8 to do anything. I must be remembering a different OS. It looks like you'll have to use msconfig while in safe mode. You can use that link I posted earlierp to guide you.

Thanks for the help. I found the problem. It was a Microsoft Security Update, KB891711. A Google search confirmed that this update has caused some problems.

Another update: I uninstalled that security update and downloaded an updated version of it, per the MS web site. Then the updated version started causing run time errors every time I tried to do anything, so I uninstalled the updated version as well.

Belatedly: in '98 hold the left shift key down after the ram counts up to get the menu choices. Also if you can run msconfig from the run line from safe mode you can do some great testing from that application.
