hey everyone,

the gf is potentially headed to SA for work. she's a UT grad, looking for a safe area with a good vibe or an affordable city dwelling. she'd be going to a new health science program by UTSA and would probably like to stay near there.

all we know is Austin, so the target comparable areas are like Hyde Park, Tarrytown, Far West, or SoCo/SoLa (although nothing truly compares to Austin

thanks in advance!!

thanks, midtown...
what about safety? that's a major concern, she's a pretty little thang and will likely be living alone...

Safety wise it's really no different than any other mid size city, I'm guessing it's pretty comparable to Austin. Although we haven't had any mob style beatings lately.

i moved to sa a few yrs back after 18 yrs in austin. is she thinking apt or house? which utsa campus - 1604 and I10? if so, then anywhere along 1604 is great. blanco, stone oak areas have taken off. lots of bars, restaraunts, etc. there. the hyde park / tarrytown comparisons are all more central - alamo heights, monte vista, king william, etc. you would not want to live there and do utsa everyday. sa is not as easy to get around as austin.

Mira Vista is the apartment complex across the street from the La Cantera mall the midtown referred to. I lived there about five to six years ago and I never worried about my safety (however the area has developed significantly since I lived there). I would definately recommend living there.

Wherever she lives, she definately wants to stay around the Northwest area of San Antonio.

Ah I assumed the UTSA campus not the HSC. The Huebner Oaks area is still pretty convenient to the Medical Center. The only issue is crossing IH10 but once she does shes home free down Fredricksburg right into the Medical Center. I live a little further up Huebner I got my wife to the labor and delivery at Methodist in about 10 min.

me too. when you said utsa, i was thinking 1604. castle hills is cool old neighborhood near med center, but probably not good for someone young and new to town. i'd suggest an apt locator and specify apt's newer than 5-6 yrs. there is little crime here, and i've been pleased. very few rough areas outside 410.

Well, as a single female in SA, I can say for me the safest place imo is the north side (1604/281 area). There are tons of things out this way now and a bunch of new apartments. Good bars etc.

I've lived in most places mentioned on here, and still prefer the NC side now.

It's not exactly close to where she will be working, but its not a bad commute at all. I used to work in the medical center and didn't mind the commute each morning.

Good Luck!

Yeah 1604 & 281 is a nice area but traffic will be bad to get to the medical center. I still don't understand why these two highways don't connect.

I lived in SA for seven years with another girl and we felt very safe in the Hubener Oaks area. We found plenty of places to go to in our area. It's not the like the areas you mentioned but like someone else mentioned those areas are kinda far from the medical center. It's easy to forget how big San Antonio is, going from one area of town to the other is a much bigger deal than doing that in Austin.
