it's called searching online, and you get no sweater for this. if you want it all, get an iPod, if you want style without it all get a Mini iPod, if you want mp3's only then get a Nytrus or whatever it is. jeeez, do some homework holmes. this is a tired HF topic and very polarized.
I must be strange, but I would classify asking a question on an internet message board, "online research". I think most people that ask questions here are doing research, but are seeking more personal experience rather that technical information. That's my take though.
You should be able to get various 256 MB flash players for around $150 dollars. Less storage per buck, but better portability, cheaper, and longer battery life, and it's still about 4 CD's worth of stuff so you don't need to constantly upload stuff to it. Plus no need to remember recharging the things. The Samsungs are fairly decent in that price range.
don't get a rio nitrus, they are extremely unreliable. mine died approximately 2 weeks after the ******* warranty expired, which was basically 3 months after i bought it.
I'll put a vote in for the Archos Jukebox Recorder 20GB. It's not pretty like the iPod so if you are trying to impress the ladies get an iPod. If you are not technical get the iPod. If you have more money than brains get an iPod.
If you're a geek it's hard to argue with the Archos: open source OS with Rockbox, 20GB player with NO DRM, shows up as an external drive and can be used to back-up data (iPod only handles music files), works with any mp3 software (not restricted to iTunes), and costs less than $180.
I've had one for a few weeks now and love it. I bought it on the recommendation of a friend who has had his for over a year with no problems.
