Help! Food in San Antonio

I have a friend who is moving to San Antonio to start PA school at Fort Sam. I recommended some good places to eat, but though I would enlist the help of Hornfans to give me some good ideas where the locals get chow.

Of course, we need Mexican food (both dives and nice), bar-b-que, and burgers.....anything is better than Fairbanks!

Los Barios (Tex-mex)
Blanco Cafe (Mex)
Chris Madrids (Burgers)
Rudys original in Leon Springs (BBQ)
Gress Moss Inn (Steaks)
Pig Stand (Late night)

Your friend is in for a real treat. In addition to those mentioned, I offer

1. Rosario's
2. El Mirador
3. La Fogata

Buen aprovecho!

This was my reply on another thread:

Mexican -
Torres Taco Haven on South Presa. My favorite place, I always try to stop by when I'm in town. Don't let the name fool you, they have a lot more than tacos.

Piedras Negras de Noche on South Laredo. Very good, this was the first place I ate after I was out of the State for 6 months (The only reason I didn't eat at Torres was because they weren't open for dinner at the time).

Rosarios on South Alamo. Good, but kind of trendy. It gets really loud and busy at night.

El Jarro de Arturo on San Pedro. My dad's been eating here since the 70s, and he keeps going back for a reason.

Mi Tierra off of Dolorosa. This is kind of a more touristy place, but the bakery is really good and the food, especially late at night/early in the morning is good. It can get really busy, though, and parking is a pain.

La Fogata on Vance Jackson. Kind of overpriced, and probably overrated, but it is another one of those San Antonio traditions. It used to be really good, but they got a new owner about 10-12 years ago, and now I think it's just alright. But I know a lot of people who still swear by it.

Finally, Las Palapas. They are all over town, you'll see the big yellow signs. Geat for good, cheap breakfast tacos.

And tell him not to be afraid to try all the little taquerias he'll find. They are usually outstanding.

As Far as barbecue, tell him to come up to Austin and then go out to Lockhart. Having grown up around San Antonio, there's nothing that will really knock your socks off, IMO.

And burgers, I second Chris Madrids.

Martha's (410 and Broadway) - vastly underrated Tex-Mex.
La Fonda (on Main) - excellent higher-end Mexican with a nice patio (there are other La Fondas, but they suck).
Barbecue Station (410 near Harry Wurzbach) - decent Q, not too far from Ft. Sam.
Chester's Hamburgers (410 and N. New Braunfels) - good burger without the chaos of Chris Madrid's.

Burgers:
Chesters(fast,easy, and good)-many locations
Texas Hamburger Co(like chesters and pretty good selection of different kinds of burgers)-located off Huebner Rd.

Mexican-stuff that hasn;t been menetioned yet
Salsalitos(good and nice atmosphere)-2 locations(I prefer the one off Nacg. rd)

General
Alamo Cafe(not my favorite place to get tex-mex, but a really fun place to go w/ good margaritas and the best queso/tortillas)-located on hwy 281

I will think of some more cause I've eaten at many good dive mexican places just can't think of them all right now.

on the subject of food in sa, anyone eaten at Miss Ellies pizza off bitters? I think it's close to bitters and 281.

I've heard it is awesome but wanted to see what anyone else thought.

Apparently Austin is now the center of the universe and everything is "Around Austin."

If they are looking for something a tad more upscale. The Lodge is hard to beat. Silo is good too.
