I'm looking for ideas for what my be the problem with my A/C unit. It is the original unit from when the house was built over 30 years ago so that may be part of the problem. The air handler has been blowing non-stop for 4 or 5 says now.

The compressor stops/starts as expected and it cools OK, so that does not appear to be part of the problem at all. I have tried several things to get the air handler to stop blowing. I have changed the thermostat from air to heat and back, changed batteries in the programable thermostat. I cut all power to the house so that the air handler would momentarily stop, but as soon as I turn power back on to the house it starts blowing again. Anyone have any ideas? Anyone know of a good A/C service in the Dallas area that they can recomend? Thanks!!

1- did you look underneath the bottom edge of your thermostat and make sure the "fan toggle" is set to "auto" rather than "on"?

2- might have burned up a relay or some other control component. seems like I opened mine up at the old condo when it was doing something similar and I could see one of the electrical components was fried. I didn't even know what it was, but replaced it and everything was hunky dory. I think it was a relay.

If not get out the check book and be ever so thankful you do not have the opposite problem of the fan not coming on at all!

sounds like a bad solenoid or relay, but the fan running all the time won't hurt much. Mine runs 24/7 because I have a UV light in my return duct to kill mold and I don't have any problems with it.

Thanks for the advice, I agree the electrical relay or solenoid is the most likely cause. Anyone know a good A/C company/person in the Dallas area?

my electric bill is not bad. the newer units have high efficiency two-stage fans that draw very little power. It's the condenser that sucks the juice.

Bill Marshall Heating and Air is in Valley View or Corinth and he services Dallas. The dude put my unit in 11 years ago and has done some cheap repairs on my unit since. I had a similar issue not long ago and it seemed a varmint had nibbled one of the thermosta wires out at the unit. he fixed it for like 75 clams. I don't have a number for him with me. Great guy
