Hello Rowdy!

Lost our 8 year old golden Abby in October.
My dad passed away last month.
Our stray Peke Duke left us about 3 weeks ago.
It has been the quietest, and strangest 3 weeks in our house in over 25 years.

The Lost family is ready for a ray of sunshine. Say hello to Rowdy!

He is 3 months old, adopted from CAPs here in Houston. He was a stray. He is a Wheaten Terrier mix, and he is a sweetie! Lostboy #2 and I went down to CAPs last Wed and looked at dogs. We took photos of 5 that we liked and went home to discuss with dad. Over the next 3 days others on our list got adopted, but Rowdy was still there. So Saturday, we listened to "fate". Lostboy2 and I drove down to Sugarland and adopted Rowdy! Monday he visited the vets for a snip snip, and today he is in his forever home! Yeah! Welcome Rowdy!

Yer a lucky dog, Rowdy. Please tell me he is named after the behavior and not the gymnast, please. Pretty please.

Look at that wet nose! What are you using to keep him that still? At what point other than sleep or about to pee or poop on the floor does a 3 month old pup stay that still?

l00p - I just happened to get him at a still moment. I have about 49 pics of his back end! And yesterday morning he was still a little wobbly from his surgery. Tuesday evening, though, he was more a little "rowdy'!

He is a sweetie, that is for sure. And a little ray of sunshine in our house.

Oh and the name was from the shelter. He looks like trouble on 4 legs, so I guess it fits. You can tell though he was a stray, some very submissive postures at times, and skittishness (is that a word) in some situations. How about being named after Rowdy Yates? Got that Clint thing going on?

I also really tried to get the photo smaller. The one posted is a 60% reduction in size already. Sorry for the size, but he so danged cute!

Man, that dog has a face that looks into your soul. lol. Lostman, I can't tell you how satisfied I feel when hearing that a stray has been given a good home. Well done!

Rowdy Gaines is a swimmer, not a gymnast. Nothing wimpy about being a swimmer.

Rowdy Yates was played by Clint Eastwood. Nothing wimpy about Eastwood.

lostman, your Rowdy is as cute as they come, and I commend you and the Lost family for taking a rescue dog. These little guys deserve to have a forever home where they needn't worry about food or safety, and can just live their lives bringing joy to the lucky people who have adopted them.

Congratulations!

Gymnasts, in my view, aren't wimpy, either. They do athletic things I never would dream of doing.

However, I'm not sure this Rowdy is capable of doing anything worthy of the name...

Thanks all! Rowdy is a real sweetie. He is only about 17 pounds now, but he thinks he is way bigger! He still has some adjustments - the big one being crate training. He does not like it, but it is not an option! At least I am on summer vacation, so some nights with reduced sleep are not too detrimental. That and housebreaking, but that is not too bad right now.

He is a hoot to watch tear around the yard right now. He chases the balls we throw, but does not know yet that he is supposed to bring them back. That is Lostboy#2's goal - train him to get wiffle balls and put them back in the bucket when he is hitting off the T. :) Puppy classes start Sunday.

You girls are totally right, he was a swimmer. And no, being a gymnast is not girlie. Those guys are super strong. I just keep thinking of Mitch Gaylord, I think, in Gymkata.

Can't wait to read about what Rowdy gets into on a daily basis. He is already contemplating feats.

No, it's quite okay. I am glad to not actually know this information you can provide with seeming ease!

Hey - don't forget Rowdy Yates! Maybe he is named after him! He sure feels lucky, punk.

Rowdy was the name the shelter gave him and we honestly could not come up with a better one after we got him home.

Been a part of the Lost home for a little over a week now. The terrier in him has most definitely shown itself. He barks furiously at all joggers when we are walking. And a bit aggressively at other dogs. We are in puppy obedience classes and they gave us a "time out" move to use when he does this. So we are working on it daily. I will show him who the alpha dog in this house is yet! Housebreaking is an issue too, since the whole world was his toilet before us. So he has not gotten into much mischief. He is either in his kennel or on a leash in the house until he stops thinking the house is also a huge toilet! But nothing is more fun than sitting in the recliner when you come home from work, and he stretches out on his back in your lap for a belly rub!

Thanks all! Two weeks into this and he is still a sweetie. A bit agressive towards other dogs, but we are working on that in puppy class.

Anyone have any ideas on how to get him to let us know he has to go out? He has gone 2 days now with no accident at all. But I keep an eye on him and watch the time. So far, efforts to teach him to scratch the door or bark to let us know he wants out have met blank stares from him. Any suggestions?

Praise heavily when he goes to the door to let you know. The back door, specifically. Make sure there is plenty of praise when he goes outside and maybe treats. If he tricks you and does not go when he goes outside, no treats, no praise. No punishment but no praise either. That is punishment enough for a dog sometimes. Hope that helps.

Oh, combine the praise with some "atta boy's".

Example" Good boy, Rowdy, GOOD BOY, go "potty" outside. Want to go outside, Rowdy? Good boy go outside to "potty".

I use potty because I don't know what word you use for when he tinkles. I assume that when he goes poop outside you use the proper word, OU. "Rowdy want to go outside to OU?".
