Heisman

I like our Sam's chances if the Horns win the B12... I think he's as good as anyone else in the running. He needs our Defense to play top ten ball to help.

Most likely Trevor Lawrence.

Fantastic QB with one NC already, then played and played well for another one last year.

QB on the #1 team in the country, and hard to see Clemson losing in the regular season, or in the ACC title game.

Will probably leave college football after this year, so the voters will want to send him out with a Heisman.

Sam would need Trevor to falter this year, and win the B12 to have a shot.

I saw Clemson play. Trevor Lawrence is pretty equal with Sam. He’s faster. Texas would need 10-0 with some very good defense to beat out Trevor Lawrence! It IS possible. Sam had the better game last night. He’s got a shot!

Howell threw 2 picks vs 1 TD............ not a Heisman like game........... unless Lawrence loses a game and Sam /Horns win out and win the Big 12 he wont surpass him.

Trevor Lawrence, QB, Clemson Tigers: 22-for-28 Passing, 351 Yards, 3 Touchdowns (2 rushing)

In just 30 minutes of game time, Ehlinger compiled 429 yards passing and five touchdowns — both career highs (for a full game) and Texas' records for one half.

Sam 1, Trevor 0

Also cannot hurt that Sam did it live in front of two Heisman voters ...

Andre Ware was calling the game on LHN
Ricky Williams was on the LHN set too
Not sure if Earl was there live, that would be 3

BA, Sam may lead on the technical score, but Lawrence has 100% of the judges' score until Lawrence incurs a season-ending injury. Just the way it is.

Also, 3/4 of the country does not receive LHN, and thus can not see it on ESPN streaming.

Earl? Isn’t he the same guy that insisted Texas needs a black QB to win a national championship?

Earl?? Didn’t he say something like Texas needs a “Black” QB to compete at the highest level? Just sayin.

Yes Sam had a great showing against a much weaker opponent but he has an uphill battle imo. Lawrence is like the elephant in the room and I doubt his team falters and if it does it won't be until the playoffs and then it's too late. So I'm not going to think about the Heisman for Sam, if he finishes a close second that's good enough for me and we will be able to use that for recruiting though it's great we already have Ewers coming in. It's good to be a longhorn.

Keep in mind the Heisman isn't a career award. At least its not supposed to be. That said its really a meaningless award but if Sam plays this way the whole season he will be in NY.

Not supposed to be, but often is, which is why freshman rarely win it.

Sam's stats, impressive they are, were against a hired, non-P5 team, while Clemson played a team in conference.

Unfortunately it's Trevor's to lose. If he doesn't falter anywhere along the way, he wins it. If he does, and Sam continues to excell, there's a chance - but none if Trevor plays to his past form.

I think that Sam is in a good position. It seems like favorites often don’t win. Best example is probably Payton Manning. He was the wall-to-wall favorite, and lost. Another is Leonard Fournette, who was everyone’s choice (and there was no close second) for most of that particular year. Like Manning, he didn’t win.

It seems like the voters will look for a reason to pick someone other than the odds on favorite.

I decided that the Heisman Trophy was a farce in 1996 when Orlando Pace didn’t win it. It’s supposed to go to the best college football player in the country and for my money he was that that year.

Instead it has devolved into a popularity award that goes to a skill position player on an NC caliber team every year. While it is only supposed to apply to that season, I don’t think the voters are capable of separating the body of work from that.

Sam would have to have an undeniable, record breaking, jaw-dropping season to beat out Trevor Lawrence I’m afraid. There isn’t much to dislike about Trevor Lawrence there just isn’t. All indications are that he is a good and humble kid, he has once-in-a-lifetime gifts, and he also has the hardware.
It’s just really hard seeing him not win it this year especially if Clemson is in position to compete for all the marbles. He’s NFL ready at the end of this year & wouldn’t have anything left to prove by coming back for his senior year.

Is it for the best player - I thought it was for the most outstanding or some such wording, that would allow for the most impactful player or such.

It’s not gone to the best overall player since its inception.

Or Colt getting robbed by Bradford

I disagree with that.....Dick Kazmaier (1951-Princeton), Earl was pretty badass in 77 and there are plenty of others. The award has definately changed since the late 80's I do agree with.

Longhorn fan through and through, but I just see such a rare, pure QB talent in Lawrence that I don't see how Sam beats him, if Lawrence stays healthy. (Of course, I hope I'm wrong, and will be happy if I am).

As I noted above, wall to wall favorites often don’t win. The other consideration may be the talent around the player. If it’s close and the voters conclude that Lawrence had more surrounding talent, that will help Sam.

It’s way too early...
