Heirloom Tomatoes

I decided to get a few heirloom tomatoes at Central Market, and they are outstanding.

A bit pricey, but the flavor is amazing.

If you are planning a special dinner, please select some of these for the salad.

You really get what a tomato is supposed to taste like.

how do you know that a tomato isn't supposed to taste like a regular old celebrity or beefsteak?

just kidding.

i bought a bunch of heirloom seeds for my ol' man a few years ago and he wouldn't even plant them. he wanted the celibrity and beefsteak and sweet 100s.

They're definitely the way to go and really do spoil you quick.

Anyone know a good source for heirloom seedlings/small plants in the Austin or San Antonio area? I've always wanted to try to grow some myself.

I've grown a lot of Heirloom tomatoes. They are MUCH more work than the hybrids. They are prone to disease and have much lower production. For example, I grew some "green zebras" this year. I got around 3.5 pounds out of one plant and it is now dead. Under the exact same conditions, I have gotten almost 14 pounds of "big beef" hybrid tomatoes and the plant is still cranking them out.

As far as taste goes though, there is no comparison.

You can get heirloom tomatoes from Home Depot for usual varieties. This place has a decent selection of heirlooms:

My buddy/room mate works at Whole Foods downtown and brought home the absolute best tomatoes I have ever eaten in my life the other day. They are called (I **** you not) "Dirty Girl" tomatoes and taste like candy. He brought them home last week and told me Monday that they just got in another shipment. If you have the time, I highly suggest that you drop by and grab some. Well worth the effort.
