Heckling TCU

This may have come up in the game threads...But does anyone know who the male Texas fan was that heckled TCU all three games? I mean, the guy was non-stop. Some of the things he said fell flat but he was dogged in his determination!

His funniest line came tonight when TCU was batting in the second: He was giving that heavy TCU guy crap for going Ofer yesterday....Then the CF comes up (the one who didnt make the catch in the first inning) and he says "We got another Ofer?" Some guy next to him says "He went Ofer yesterday" and the guy responds "He's O for catching tonight." in that dry Texas accent.

I can truly say he made watching all the games that much more enjoyable. Wherever you may be...

to you.

The guy sounded like a turd.

If someone wants to yell something once or twice an inning, that is fine. The people who do it to every batter and nearly every pitch need to shut up. They are rarely funny and are more annoying to the fans than the players.

heckling is for folks who have either never played the game, or were never really good at it. that goes for any sport.

i had to listen to some jerk-off & his spawn during sunday's game yell at our players every time they took a strike.

we may have lost that day, but i'm going to give augie the benefit of the doubt since he knows just a little bit more about baseball than i do.

You can be loud and cheer without constant heckling. I thought some of his stuff was funny and don't mind a sampling of it, but every batter was too much. You got to know when enough is enough.

Your first baseball game? You should go to a few more. But not if you don't want to hear heckling, which is a baseball tradition which arose from those who played the game, called "bench jockeying." You won't be going to any games without hearing it in the stands, unless you limit your attendance to Little League games.

i agree with rex, one or 2 comments here and there was no big deal, but this jerkoff was talking the entire game, on national tv. even if his b.s. was funny i wouldn't think anything of it, but his smack talk was weak.

If you want to see and hear real heckling just go to a local softball high school game next year and any game will do. I guarantee that when a team is batting you will see lots of heckling done to the opposing pitcher by those players in the dugouts. Not the fans mind you but the players.

Most of them are being held in various top security locations, and undergoing chemical detoxification and forced mental cleansing operations as we speak. A few wander the streets aimlessly, holding up signs saying "will rag for spare change."
Some gather aluminum cans in parking lots after athletic events before sleeping under highway overpasses, pushing their shopping carts about town. One has opened a roadside kazoo stand, but the recession has hurt sales.
It's been sad to witness it all.

hell, Gary Ward, OSU coach also "returned" a foul ball that we had signed and tossed onto the field. only he didn't "toss" it back. threw it as hard as he could into wild bunch. missed everyone and hit aluminum seatback. scared the crap out of all of us. then someone reminded him of his aim. those were the days.

I think it was the 4th inning when that dude yelled just before the pitch - "Hey Brian start swinging now, maybe you'll catch up to it by Monday." The hitter, Bryan Holaday (I think) then hit a single to center to end Jungman's no-hit bid. At first I was lauging, then I thought, wait it IS Monday - and then he gets a hit. I'm not much into heckling people. It used to piss me off when they heckled me - whenever they did, I always jacked one into the gap. You shouldnt heckle the players.

I remember that very well.

The first time he faked a hard throw right into the middle of all of us and then threw it up to the top of the stands. The next time however he launched it hard right in the middle of the Wild Bunch. Crazy times and man I am getting old.

Somebody tell me if it's still the same, but back in the 70s/80s, for foul balls, the PA announcer would say: "Please return all balls to the field."

I always thought that was kind of cheap for a school as rich as my UT, particularly since most of those fouls were caught by kids who didn't have the money to pay to come in, they'd just hang out below the cheap bleacher seats.

The Wild Bunch put a couple of twists on it.

A foul ball was popped back into the stadium seats and they implored the fan to throw it to them. They huddled over it, scriibling I'm sure a bunch of comments for the ump, and then threw it back to him in between inning breaks.

The ump looked at it, rolled it around reading it all, chuckled and stuck it in his pocket. I'm betting he kept it as a souvenir.

Then, the next day, the Wild Bunch was even better prepared.

They showed up with about 6-8 yellow tennis balls, and made it clear they had them, tossing thim up like jugglers well in advance of the game start --- just BEGGING the PA announcer to say after a foul ball: "Please return all balls to the field."

He didn't during that game.

The Wild Bunch was a classic group of individuals. I must admit I tried sitting away from them but they were funny!

Someone up above mention the best way to stop hecklers is getting a big hit. Remember when UT played Lamar in 84/85? The game where Bates was out by 3 ft but was called safe, so I guess Yeast was umping even back then! Anyway, Lamar had a RF named Eddie. One inning he caught a fly ball for what he thought was the 3rd out but it was only the 2nd out. The RF crowd started giving hm hell after that and it was obviously getting to him. Then late in the game, 7th or 8th inning, he hits something like a 2run double to tie the game. When he came out to field his position after that, the crowd didn't raze him and most of us even applauded him. He just looked over at us and grinned. Then the above mentioned Bates play happened and we went to Omaha.

I was heckling Gary Matthews Jr when he came through Midland in the minor leagues.Telling him he will never be as good as his dad and so forth. My seats are right behind on deck circle. He hit this mammoth home run and takes a really slow trot around bases.Comes back over where i am sitting and flexes his arm and told me " you think my dad ever hit one that far?" It was priceless. He really shut me up good. WEll at least for a inning or so.

I think for the most part fans get that it's in fun, but there are ways to heckle good naturedly, and then there are the guys who really seem like they want to see a guy injured. My guess is most of the players can tell the difference.

I'm fine with funny, reasonably good-natured heckling. It is part of the game, and the players know that. The guys last night were annoying, but whatever.

What bothers me is when people get personal about it. A&M fans are notorious for this. Googling someone to find out about the skeletons in their closet or their parents' or siblings' closets and then using it to get into their heads in a game ... to me, that crap has no place in college baseball. I'm fine with getting on someone for having a bad day on the field, but it should not go beyond the realm of baseball, IMO, especially not when we're talking about amateur athletes.

The Wild Boys have been replaced by the Hellraisers to an extent, although they are all sports. I have talked to some of them at softball and baseball games, they mention its hard to go to baseball because of the way seating is now, and they usually get kicked out from behind the dugout seats in the 8th inning by a rich/late alumni. Althought when i do hear them, the bring the heckling heat.

Rex Kramer sounds as if he wants everyone to get a participation ribbon for just playing the game. "If you can't say anything nice then don't say anything".
This is part of baseball and will always be part of baseball. The "Wild Bunch" were great in the day and would still be great. Why do you think tech started their bunch?

I still miss "The Beast".

My favorite story of heckling at UT was during one of the early season basketball games...You know, the ones where there is nobody there and we are playing directional schools. Anyway...It was so empty the players could easily hear us from behind the basket. One of the players on the other team was a pretty large individual and we decided he might want some candy....Sooo....We started dangling fun-size candy bars at him throughout the game and yelling about it. Sure enough, after the game he walks over and says "Where's my candy?" and he was rewarded.

I agree with the poster who said most people do it with the intention of fun...But the ones that make is personal step over the line.

The Wild Bunch were terrific. At basketball games in Gregory Gym with Abe Lemons coaching...these guys were often as entertaining as the game itself.

I can remember one game, sitting directly behind them, waiting for the game to start. They were doing their usual thing. And then a VERY well-hung girl walked by on the court in front of us. There was a moment of stunned silence and then they all broke into spontaneous applause (clapping). The girl turned our way and bowed and jiggled a bit which made the applause even louder.

Then the referees walked out on the court and they promptly changed to loud boos.
