Heathrow Terminal 5

Has anyone connected through Heathrow's new Terminal 5 lately? I know they had quite a mess on their hands with baggage and such when it opened in March. Just wondering what to anticipate now .........will be connecting there on my way to Paris on Friday.

I connected through T5 two weeks ago. The place is nuts...

Anywho... this is my only advice:

They pretty much forced everyone to check in their rolling bags. I'm talking about the kind of bags that are designed for carry on. Their policy was that each bag had to easily fit in the metal container (the kind you see at all airports). What's the big deal you ask? Well.. their policy also requires your bag easily slide into place without any assitance. Pretty much everyone's bag was small enough to fit, but large enough not to easily fall in place. In my case, the bag would have fit if it wasn't for the soft handle that I could have easily pushed aside, but the guy forced me to check it in. Keep in mind my previous two flights had no problem with this bag.... and I was already running late for my connection because of delays in those previous flights. I ended up having to run to my gate because of this... ugh...

Oh... and enjoy Paris. It really is a beautiful city.

I don't understand why some international airports are so ridiculous about the carry-on policy. Frankfurt and Hong Kong are also both extremely strict about what size bag you can carry on.

It's especially ridiculous since you're typically going to be flying 777s and 747s out of those airports. I work in the industry, I know what size bag fits in the overhead bins. You could crawl up into a 777 bin and sleep in it, yet if your bag is bigger than a purse, the people at those airports force you to check it. Stupid.

I've recently flown through other terminals at Heathrow and didn't have any problems with carry-on bag size. It was just Terminal 5 that was absurdly strict.

As a carrier that shuffles bags to/from BA T5 at Heathrow, we've been pretty pleased with baggage performance this summer relative to summers past. BA has historically collected a pile of mishandled bags every summer and then shipped the pile to Italy to be sorted and returned to their owners in the fall. It doesn't seem like they're having the same problems this year.
