HDTV-Sony Wega LCD or Samsung DLP?

I have been looking at HDTV's for over a year, and just when I think I'm set on one to get, I get gunshy and pass. I'm a big sports watcher and want an HDTV that displays the best picture and sound for Sports viewing. I really like the Sony Grand Wega LCD's, the Samsung DLP's, and the new JVC HDTV's. My brother has the Samsung DLP, and it looks great for games in HDTV, but not great when watching non-HDTV broadcasts. Which HDTV is best for sports viewing, HDTV broadcasts and non-broadcasts both?

I have a JVC DLP and the HD action is great. I will say the regular sports action not so much.

I think the samsung looks a little better.

Mitsubishi just came out with some DLP sets that supposedly blow away the Samsung models.

Not surprising, since Mitsubishi has always been tops in the rear projection area.

Out of the bunch the JVC is the best thing out there right now. It is not DLP though,it is similar to LCOS, but not exact. It is brighter, pixels are closer together, and non hd material looks much better then the DLP, even the new HD2+ chip. Becareful of the Mits, it has a screen on the front that gives a lot of glare and when watching non hd material has the worst stretch mode of anything out there. If I would put the units in order, I would put the JVC, Sony and then I would look at the toshiba new DLP it does a better job then the Samsung. If you are in Austin contact me, I am in the business and can get you a good deal on a TV, I have taken care of a couple of other horn fans. Just send me a message.

How do the JVC and Sony do on standard definition signals from satellite? Are regular espn/ fox sports/ network games watchable?

The JVC does a little better then the sony on standard broadcast, its pixels are closer together with very little gaps seperating them and there is less of a screen door effect. The JVC also is a very bright set, we have had to turn the brightness way down on it and is still is a brighter pic then the sony or the samsung. Overall the jvc just kicks ***, if you want to see the difference we have all three technologies lined up at our store and you can judge for yourself, if you are in Austin. If you come in please ask for me.
Thanks

Pioneer does make very great video displays, the only problem is they only make plasma now and that is not in the price range. Yes the pioneer elite is the best crt rear projection tvs out there and you can still find some of them, they do better with analog material and do have a good color, but when you look at hd material the new fixed pixel displays do a great job.

Demand for flat panel displays is apparently tapering off in the U.S. but still on the rise in Asia accordingto some study I rsaw last week.

I would guess that will mean in another year the prices will ecline to spur demand.

I probably won't buy until sometime next year for a couple of reasons. Namely that the technology in the DLP/LCD arena is progressing still and that I think that costs will indeed continue to fall even as quality increases.

Of course I am cheap and haven't exactly decided how I am going to remodel the kitchen/living which is going to greatly influence the decision. Still thinking of large DLP that I can slide back into a recessed area behind a large built in. They are light enough to do this easily, and the ability to replace the bulb is a biggie from the longevity standpoint.

hlaustin speaks the truth...

I've got a Sony 42" GW-LCD and I love it... awesome picture.. the HD is incredible.. and the menu functions and such are great..

my dad got a 46" Samsung... not very good.. it isn't as bright as the Sony... it has more of a green haze to it... and the functions suck... when flipping through channels you have to manually change the aspect ratio of the screen to what is best suited for that channel.. otherwise you wind up with stretched or zoomed pictures etc... the Sony automatically adjusts to the 4:3 ratio and normal tv channels... it is awesome...

if you don't go visit Harlan here to shop for your tv, make sure you play with the remote controls some... flip through some settings.. force them to put the tv on regular cable channels.... if they say the system isn't set up for it then leave and go to another store...

I have a 56-inch Samsung DLP. It is very good for both HD and non-HD broadcasts, imo. I have the HLP model, and I provide a word of caution because I've experienced the following problems:

1. Lamp not powering up when I turn the TV on after it was already on earlier in the day. This can be fixed by Samsung, I've just been too lazy to deal with it.
2. Audio and video are a little out of sync (video usually lags). Not a huge problem when watching sports, but can be annoying when watching movies or music videos.

I got the 56' Samsung DLP a few weeks ago and have been very pleased with it. The HD and non HD picture look great, imo, and I haven't noticed any of the audio/visual delay others have mentioned. I have noticed that scenes with low light/smoke - HEAT comes to mind - that the images aren't as crisp. Not sure what causes this. Other than that, I think the Samsung is a great tv.

I think I'd go with a JVC HD-DILA (basically a DLP) - good stuff. At CEDIA not too long ago, that one seemed to stick out in my mind as one of the better DLP models (I don't think I'd go LCD - the blacks typically suck).

2004 was the last run of any Pioneer or Elite CRT projection TVs, they are shifting all there focus to Plasma displays. About 6 months ago they bought out NEC's plasma factories and are planning to use them in the next year.
As far as the DLP issue, it is a known problem of samsung to have a lag, if you go into any show room and watch the set next to an lcd or the jvc dila, you will notice that the samsung is always a fraction of a sec. behind. I have had to switch out a couple for some of my "geek" customers, it is not a huge issue but it is there.
Once again take a look at them for yourself.

Just bought the JVC HD-ILA 52Z585 last night. Had it delievered this morning (I know I'm a Heathen

) Hadn't played with it too much but it looked better than Mitubi, Sony and Samsung in my opinion. We shall see..................

Also bought the stand for it and it's pretty slick-------a little pricey but slick.

I have a DLP and have no problems, love it, it rocks.

Can't comment on the LCD.
