HDTV antenna

Sports are pretty much all I watch on broadcast TV. I don't want to have to pay for cable to watch sports on HD.

So I have a ginormous LCD TV now, but my antenna won't pick up any channels - not even local non-HD channels. A twisty-tie or wrapped foil does better than the antenna I have.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good indoor antenna to receive HD channels?

Where are you located? If you arent too far (20ish miles) from the towers you could use a silver sensor indoor antenna. People on a lot of Home AV forums love them. I live 16 miles from the towers and did not want to chance not getting signal so i went bigger and got the channel master 4228. It is an outdoor antenna but i placed mine in the attic and get 96-100% signal on all the locals. You can possibly find the silver sensor local for a few more bucks (sears has carried them in the past) and i know that Fry's carries the 4228 by the computer hardware section.

Ok, I went and bought 3 antennas to try out.

That one seems to work the best.

However, I still can't get ABC. Neither regular or digital.

I'm 22.7 miles from WFAA's tower. They are VHF channel 8/8.1

So it looks like I'm going to need something more powerful than the Terk HDTVa.

Any recommendations for an indoor antenna that does well with VHF?

I'll try the silver sensor. The other is too much for an indoor antenna I think.

I believe the Terk and the Silver Sensor are similar- and are both UHF. Hence, the problem w/ the VHF channel.

My old Silver Sensor would not pick up ABC (VHF) at my house here in Dallas, and also had problems with 21 and 52.

However, I replaced it with the Channelmaster above- which is awesome. It's a UHF antenna, but picks up everything well. You need space for it though.

Ok, now I've tried 5 antennas, including the silver and terk linked above.

With the Terk HDTVa (best so far) I'm getting KDFW-DT (Fox) 4.1 in Dallas.

KDFW is violet coded on antenna web. ABC is yellow coded.

Still can't get ABC.

Dammit.

If you are worried about having to run another line into the house- you may be able to tie the Channelmaster into your cable that runs into your house- via diplexers- and not have to run a separate coax cable. Depends upon cable system/ satellite- but, usually works.

I could never pick up Channel 8 consistently w/ the Silver Sensor- and 21/52 were no go's. M Streets area.
