VIRGINIA CAVALIERS
Both teams come in on winning streaks-Texas (2-1) on a two game streak and Virginia (4-0) with four wins to open the season. Both head coaches should be familiar with each other. Virginia’s Joanne Boyle is in her first year at Virginia after being at Cal the previous six years. She was an assistant coach for Coach G at Duke for nine years. In a quirk of scheduling, Coach Boyle will face the coach that helped give her start in Coach G and the school where she was a head coach-Cal. Both teams are ranked in the AP top 25 after not being ranked last week. Cal is 22 while Texas is 24. Virginia evened the series at 3 all with an 86-83 win in 2007.
Virginia has six players that provide most of their scoring. Three are in double figures while three others are just off that mark. Chelsea Shine (# 50, 6-2 Sr. F) leads the way with 11.0 ppg. Ariana Moorer (# 15, 5-7 Sr. G) averages 10.3 ppg while Jazmin Pitts (# 21, 6-1 Soph. F) adds 10.0 ppg. Ataira Franklin (# 23, 5-11 Soph. G, 9.5 ppg), China Crosby (# 1, 5-6 Jr. G, 8.0 ppg) and Lexie Gerson (# 14, 5-11 Jr. G, 7.3 ppg) are the other supporting scorers. Simone Egwu (# 4, 6-3 Jr. C) adds 4.8 ppg as a starter. Shine is also the Cavaliers top rebounder at 8.5 rpg. Four others average between 5.8 and 4.5 rpg. Crosby (12) and Moorer (11) lead the team in steals. Franklin’s 4 blocks tops the team. Gerson leads the team with 11 assists off the bench while Crosby is second with 10. Moorer (0-7, 0%), Franklin (3-13, 23.1%), Crosby (4-10, 40%) and Gerson (5-9, 55.6%) are the main threats from BTA. Moorer hit only 18% from BTA last season but Franklin was 43-90 for 47.8% last season. Horns will have to pay attention to Franklin. Moorer has taken the most FGs (14-51) but Pitts (15-21, 71.4%), Shine (16-33, 48.5%) and Gerson (10/22, 45.5%) have been the most effective. McCall is 100% from the FT line but has only taken two FTs. Crosby is 12-13 (92.3%) while Moorer (13-17, 76.5%) and Shine (12-17, 70.6%) are the only others over 67% for the Cavs.
Virginia has 12 players on their roster. Only ten are available to play this season. Sarah Beth Barnette (# 3, 6-2 Soph. F) transferred from Kentucky this summer and will sit out this season. Sarah Imovbioh (# 42, 6-2 Fr. F) has been ruled ineligible by the NCAA to compete or practice her freshman year. This leaves Virginia with five players 6-1 or taller. Eight players have played in all four games and all average over 10 minutes a game. Telia McCall (# 30, 6-1 Jr. F) averages 10.5 mpg and 4.0 ppg. The other two have played in three games. Kelsey Wolfe (# 10, 5-10 Soph. G) averages over 10 mpg while Erinn Thompson (# 5, 6-4 Soph. F/C) averages almost 7 mpg. Shine, Moorer, Franklin, Crosby and Egwu have started all four games. Pitts & Gerson provide plenty of scoring off the bench.
Projected starting lineups are based on the last game. Pretty easy for these two as neither has changed their starting lineup since the season started.

Texas UVA
Ashley (6-4) Egwu (6-3)
Cokie (6-4) Shine (6-2)
Yvonne (5-7) Crosby (5-6)
Ashleigh (5-8) Moorer (5-7)
Chassidy (5-10) Franklin (5-11) [/pre]
Virginia’s inside scoring, a big part of their offense, will be tested by the shot blocking of Texas. The big question for Texas will be if Ashley can stay out of foul trouble. If Virginia is forced to rely on their outside shooting, they could have trouble. Shine and Pitts have been providing the Cavs solid inside scoring through four games. They are likely to force the action inside to see if they can get Texas’ posts in foul trouble. Moorer, as poorly as she has been shooting so far, has shown an ability to get to the FT line where she is making the most of that. A third of her points have come from the FT line. Crosby and Gerson will put pressure on the Horns’ perimeter defense with their ability to hit from BTA. For Virginia, the problem will be stopping Cokie inside without getting their posts in foul trouble. If they collapse their wings/guards to help, they will leave Yvonne and Ashleigh open for the trey. Chassidy has not been shooting well from BTA but has been outstanding in hitting her midrange shots and FTs. Texas’ bench is providing 26 pts a game or 37.8% of the scoring. Virginia gets 25.3 pts or 37.3% of their scoring from their bench. Both have a rotation of 8-9 players.
Ashleigh is 32 pts from joining the 1000 pt club. She has an excellent of reaching that milestone while in Hawaii. She would need to average 10.7 pts game. She is currently averaging an even ten pts per game.
Stats are based on games played BEFORE going to Hawaii.

Stats for both teams are similar in a number of areas. Virginia has played better D, holding a scoring margin of plus 20. Texas has a slight edge in total FG % and FG% inside the arc while Virginia is slightly better from BTA (27.9% to 26.2%), nothing to write home about for either team. FTs are basically a wash as are rebounding although the Cavs have a little bit better margin. Texas has more TOs per game than Virginia (19.7 to 15.3) but Virginia doesn’t force as many TOs as Texas does. The Cavs steal the ball better but Texas has a significant advantage in blocking shots. Horns will need to take care of the ball or the Cavs will have a lot of pts of TOs while Virginia will have some trouble scoring inside. Virginia is fairly balanced in scoring, able to get points both inside and from the perimeter. Texas is still more perimeter oriented as the top three scorers are perimeter players. But the scoring inside is getting better and provides a solid threat inside.
This is going to be a tough game for both teams. Virginia is very balanced but have not played a team with the inside defense the Horns will bring. Both will be looking to not just stay in the top 25 but to move up the rankings.
Game time is 7pm CST. The game will be on KVET 1300 AM with Jon Madani doing play by play and Carol Ross providing color. Check this link for a link to listen online.
