TEXAS LONGHORNS
Texas is 2-1 for the season and is on a two game winning streak. Eyes will be on Ashleigh Fontenette to see if she reaches 1000 points in her career. She is 32 points from becoming the 36th Texas player to reach that benchmark. With a scoring average of 10.0 ppg and three games to do it in, it’s quite possible.
Horns are slowly getting players back from injuries. Fourteen players are on the roster with Shanice McKoy out for the season with an ACL injury and Kayla Brewer not scheduled to join the team until Dec. 14 due to transfer rules. Of the remaining 12, Tiff and Brady have yet to play due to various health problems. Chelsea played in her first game in the third game of the season. Horns have ten players that will take the floor for the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Showdown Tournament this weekend.
Horns are led in scoring by three players in double figures: Yvonne (16.7 ppg), Chassidy (15.8 ppg), and Ashleigh (10.0 ppg). Three others are within a couple of points of joining the double digit club: Cokie (9.0 ppg), Chelsea (9.0 ppg) and Anne Marie (8.0 ppg). While the Horns are getting better production from inside, primarily from Cokie and Anne Marie, they are still a strong perimeter scoring team. Yvonne (18-34, 52.9%), Chassidy (17-41, 41.5%), Ashleigh (11-25. 44.0%) and Cokie (9-25, 36.0%) are the main shooting threats. Yvonne (5-11, 45.5%) and Ashleigh (3-8, 37.5%) have been the Horns primary 3pt scorers. Four players have gotten to the FT line at least 10 times. Chassidy leads the way with 11-11 (100%) and Chelsea is also perfect (2-2, 100%)in her first action. As a team, the Horns are not taking full advantage of their FTs as they are hitting only 64.3% from there.
Ashley leads the team in two categories: blocks (16) and rebounds (9.3 rpg). She is the top shot blocker in Texas history with 296 blocks in her career. Cokie, with 7.7 rpg, is second in rebounding. Five others average between 3.0 and 5.0 rpg. In addition to leading the team in scoring and steals (10), Yvonne leads in assists with 21 (7.0 apg). Ashleigh with 9 and Chassidy with 7 are second and third in assists, respectively. While every Horn has at least one steal, no one has more than 3 (Ashley).
Texas has had the same starting lineup for all three games: Yvonne, Chassidy, Ashleigh, Cokie and Ashley. Ten players have played this season. Only one is averaging less than 14 minutes and she is averaging 9 mpg. Horns have three players averaging over 30 minutes per game topped by Yvonne’s 34.3 mpg. Only the starters have been available to play every game as the other five have missed at least one game due to various reasons.
Horns will have three games in three days, playing Virginia, California and Hawaii. Virginia and Cal will be tough games with Hawaii a bit of a break as the Horns will enjoy a big height advantage and should be able to dominate inside offensively.
Game times are: 7pm CST for Virginia; 4pm CST for Cal; and 9pm CST for Hawaii.
Games will be on KVET 1300 AM in the Austin area with online radio link available from
texassports.com. The Hawaii game will be available for online viewing through the Hawaii site for $6.28. All Hawaii games are available for online streaming for the same fee per game, if you are interested.
