CALIFORNIA GOLDEN BEARS
Texas and Cal head to Hawaii on two game winning streaks. Both lose their first game before winning the next two. Horns have a 3-2 edge in the overall series between the two teams. Cal won the last game played 92-82 almost exactly 17 years ago. It was played on November 25, 1994 at Cal. This will be the second of three tournament games at Hawaii for both. Cal has a new coach in Lindsay Gottlieb, who took over after three years at UC Santa Barbara. She is familiar with Cal from spending time there as an assistant and associate coach from 2005 through 2007 before going to UCSB.

The Cal Golden Bears have 13 players on their roster. Only 12 play as Tierra Rogers, a 5-11 Jr. G, was diagnosed with diagnosed with arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia before she took the court her freshman year and has kept her on the sidelines to date. Of the 12 who have seen action, ten have played in all three games.

Cal has four players averaging in double figures. Their top two scorers come off the bench: Reshanda Gray (# 21, 6-3 Fr. F) and Justine Hartman (# 40, 6-2 Fr. F) lead with the team with 12.3 ppg averages. Brittany Boyd (# 15, 5-9 Fr. G) and Talia Caldwell (# 33, 6-3 Jr. C) are the other two in double figures at 10.7 ppg. The shooting is very balanced with eight players having taken between 16 and 27 shots. Caldwell (15-20, 75.0%), Gray (14-19, 73.7%) and Hartman (18-27, 66.7%) are the only ones hitting over 42% from the field. One thing to keep in mind: Rashanda is averaging only 16.3 minutes a game while Hartman is doing her scoring in even less time: 14.3 mpg. Cal is averaging 47.4% from the field primarily due to those three. Cal takes as many 3s as Texas and they are hitting even less. They average 20.5% from BTA with Gray’s 1-1 tops percentage wise. No other player is making more than 33.3%. From BTA, Boyd is 0-7 (0.0%), Mikala Lyles (# 30, 5-8 Soph. G) is 1-8 (12.5%), Jemerigbe is 2-6 (33.3%) and both Clarendon and Lindsey Sherbert (32, 6-0 Soph. G) each has connected on 2-9 (22.2%). From the FT line, the Golden Bears are having a bit of trouble as they are making 55.4% (46-83) of their FTs. They have four players that have been to the FT line at least ten times, led by Jemerigbe’s 10-17 (58.8%). The others are Boyd at 12-14 (85.7%), Gray with a mark of 8-11 (72.7%) and Brandon at 5-10 (50.0%).

Brandon tops the team in rebounding at 11.0 rpg while adding 7.7 ppg. Caldwell is second with 6.3 rpg. Clarendon is third at 4.3 rpg. Four others are averaging between 3.0 and 3.7 rpg. That depth allows them to outrebound opponents by 15 rpg. Boyd with 10 assists and Eiza Pierre (# 4, 5-7 Jr. G) with 11 assists lead Cal in that category. Every player has at least one assist. They don’t block many shots with a team total of 12 through three games. Brandon’s six blocks leads Cal. They average 11 steals a game with Boyd’s seven tops.

Joining Boyd and Caldwell in the starting lineup are Gennifer Brandon (# 25, 6-2 RS Soph. F), Layshia Clarendon (# 23, 5-9 Jr. G) and Afure Jemerigbe (# 2, 6-0 Soph. G). Caldwell, Clarendon and Brandon have started all three games this season. Jemerigbe and Boyd joined the starting line up in the last two games. Ten players average at least 10 mpg (Lyles) with Clarendon’s 30 topping the team. Only Erika Johnson (# 31, 6-1 Fr. G) and Avigiel Cohen (# 5, 6-0 RS Fr. G) have not played in all three games. Cohen is recovering from an ACL in 2010. For some reason, Gray’s minutes have decreased each of the last games, going from 24 to 16 to 9. Her scoring has not suffered as she has scored 11, 15, and 11 pts. Her tendency to foul may be the answer as she fouled out of the last game after playing a total of nine minutes. On the other hand, Hartman has seen the opposite happen to her playing time. It has increased each game going from 6 to 18 to 20 mpg. Her scoring has improved as her playing has increased. She scored 4 pts in her first game, added 16 in the second and 17 in the last game when she played 20 minutes. She has not fouled out but had four fouls in each of the last two games. Once those two learn to stay out of foul trouble, they will provide an outstanding one two scoring punch for Cal.Projected starting lineups based on the last game played before the Hawaii tournament. Texas has started the same group for the first three games while Cal has had the same starting lineup for the last two games.

Texas Cal

Ashley (6-4) Caldwell (6-3)
Cokie (6-4) Brandon (6-2)
Yvonne (5-7) Boyd (5-9)
Ashleigh (5-8) Clarendon (5-9)
Chassidy (5-10) Jemerigbe (6-0)

There will be a constant rotation of players for Cal. The two top scorers for Cal are Freshmen Forwards Gray and Bateman who come in off the bench. Both are accurate inside scorers. Their problem has been staying out of foul trouble. Texas posts will need to keep the pressure on defensively as Cal’s posts have been effective scoring. Cal will need to cover Texas’ 3pt shooters, especially Yvonne. Yvonne and Chassidy have been very good at getting to the FT line while penetrating. Cal has good height inside and is tall on the perimeter. Ashley will need to stay out of foul trouble to really impact the game in Texas’ favor.

Both teams will push the pace although Cal has been more successful in scoring inside and in taking advantage of their post offense. Both teams are balanced with scoring coming from all positions. Texas has a slight advantage in hitting the 3pt shot although both are taking about 14 3s a game. Both get to the FT line about the same with Texas taking better advantage than Cal. Rebounding should be a battle. The ability to end possessions and start fastbreaks could be the deciding factor in who wins this game. Both turn the ball over more than their coaches are probably happy with. Cal will face an outstanding shot blocker for the first time this season. The team that is the most effective in scoring inside the arc and close to the basket will have an advantage. If either team finds their stroke from BTA, it could turn into a 3pt shooting contest.

Cal preview. Check out the complete game notes link for much more detail on the players, etc. Nice setup.

Game time is 4pm CST. The game should be on KVET 1300 AM with Jon Madani doing play by play and Carol Ross providing color. Check this link for a link to listen online.

After a great game vs Virginia, this is the perfect trap game. A very good cal team that is flying under the radar right now. This game actually makes me more nervous than the first. They push the ball scoring 80 points in 3 of the last 4 games. They have depth and rotate a lot of players. They lost to top 15 rutgers by 3 earlier this year and look to be putting it together under their first year head coach. We've got to control the pace of the game, watch out turnovers and control the glass.

I like this game because it will be a big test for our posts. Can they play against similar height/talent without fouling? Can they win the rebounding battle? And will our depth continue to let us rotate posts in and out during the game?

Almost game time! Time to get ready for another game.
Go, Horns!

except for that spurt early in the game by Cal, it's been a pretty even game. Horns haven't been able to get closer than five and trail by six at the half. neither Chas nor Yvonne have really gone off offensively. Anne Marie is doing a good job on both ends. Still anyone's game at this point.

30 to 24 at half

Several opportunities missed on our steals,,,fast breaks have not been capitalized on...

Offense needs to pick it up 2nd half....

as has happened all season so far, Horns are leaning heavily on their experienced guards as Yvonne has 18 minutes, Chas has 16 and Ashleigh 14. AG is doing well, having played 18 minutes w/o a foul. Cal is spreading their minutes around with six with double digit minutes and only Clarendon at 17. Brandon is second with 13 minutes.

Horns having trouble getting a basket. Cal starting to put a little distance between the two, up 45-35 with 11 & a half to go.

Calls have not gone out way, but we are within 2!!

Come ON, Horns, you can do it!!

7:29 to play

Texas is in the bonus with 11 fouls. Cal on the line with Anne Marie getting a foul, her second.
