Has there been a lousier 7 weeks in UT Sports?

At the beginning of 2010, we were #2 in football, #2 in hoops and #1 in preseason baseball.

I realize back when our teams were bad things were worse, but as far as a tumble taken so quickly in so many sports - I imagine most folks felt pretty darn good about the Horns as the year began. I certainly had my chest puffed out a little extra.

The football team did maintain their ranking, though missing the big prize, and hung up another #2 in Recruiting.

But, egad, basketball is close to collapse - though I am still ever the optimist on this season getting turned around, even despite Balbay's injury

- and baseball has a long way to go. But still, not a strong start right out of the chute.

The women's hoops team has really shown some grit while the men have struggled. They may end up yet going further than the men. Who knew?

I know we're also doing well in other sports too...just not on my radar right now.

But, here's to a better next 7 weeks and Hook'em Horns!

really?

I was there during:
a time when a 7 win season and the Bluebonnet bowl was a prayer answered.

and Bob Weltlich...he of the timeout during a fast break opportunity.

I entered in 1987 and graduated in May 1990. Please stop with these "woe is us" posts regarding the last few weeks. I once laid down on the bench seats exactly on the 50 yard line, half way up in the third quarter of a football game. Before Penders, I could sit right behind the basketball team for pretty much any game. There has never been a better time to be a Longhorn!

I went to school at UT from 1986-1991. I have little patience for people who want to complain that it's been a lousy 7 weeks. I had a lousy 5 years. Deal with it.

Yes, we all remember it being terrible in the 80s and early 90s, but the OP does make a good observation. I was thinking about it the last couple of days, and I realized something. It seems, to me at least, that the moment Colt went down we (the entire UT Athletics empire) lost the wind in our sails. Coincidence, or is Colt the glue? I suppose we'll find out.

That said, I think we're fine. Baseball started out slow last year. I half expected it this year. Augie will have them up at UT-Omaha before we know it.

Lighten up all you Alices. I'm not saying it's horrible to be a Longhorn. I said in the OP that I realize we have seen the depths of despair before, BUT, have we ever been at the top in all 3 Major Sports and in 7 short weeks experienced such dramatic drops?

My question remains, though apparently it may be rhetorical since nobody sited a similar point in history.

Men's hoops are the main culprits and without such lofty pre-season expectations and unusual ascent to Number 1, this observation would not be relevant. And still may not be.

My goodness. Ease up on the OP, old-timers. It's not like he's saying he's ready to throw himself in front of a bus. He is even careful to acknowledge in his post that the teams aren't as empirically "bad" as the late 80s/early 90s; simply that we've never fallen so far so fast.

Its a really bad quote from Caddyshack 2, yes 2.

Most every team in the country would have killed for our 2009.

Now 1997, that was a year trouble and toil.

If this constitutes as bad a seven weeks as we will have from here on out, I will take it. I can remember when getting into a bowl any bowl was the goal and making the NCAA tourny at all was a pipe dream. Sure its been tough but in the grand scheme Texas is so well situated now that sometimes we dont realize just how good we have it.

Amazing to see the turn around Mack has accomplished.

Also 2008 is still one of my favorite football years...that team and those games still stick with me.
