FYI - Green Mountain is charging you for the investment of clean energy. In other words, you are getting the same stuff that TXU, Gexa, Reliant charges you for. You are paying extra for future electricty production by clean means.
If you are in Houston, get rid of Reliant. they suck. I worked there and know first hand how bad they screw customers. Find the cheapest billing company that you can and go with them.
I've been with Green Mountain for almost 4 years. No problems at all. I can't imagine a difference, except the cost. I know I am paying extra for 100% renewable and I know that it all comes out of the same pool, but I am cool with that.
If Austin is such a green city, why not let its utility customers have a choice?
I case you're wondering, Austin is a municipally owned utility. During electric dereg, Co-Ops and munys were given the option to either opt in or not opt in to the dereg market. Once you opt in, you can't opt back out. So, in Austin, we don't have a choice in providers.
I use to have Green Mountain and they were high compared to a few other choices in Houston. I currently have Direct and they seem to be among the lowest. Like goofy said, you're paying for the investment of clean energy, as it will all come from the same transmission lines to your house/apt whether you have green mountain, direct, reliant, gexa, etc.
Last time I looked the Austin regulated fees were way cheaper than the deregulated options of the rest of the state, I didn’t see anyone even close. I thought that was weird, or maybe I was looking at something wrong.
I just signed up for Austin’s green program a few months ago. It was locked for a while but must have opened back up. It is more expensive, but you are locked in for like 15 years. The way rates keep rising I thought it would be worth it down the road. Every time rates go up, people want to join and that’s when it gets locked.
