Harmon Fired

What is the over/under on how long those who lived for Augie to take some action will wait to question whether this was the right action?

I find the knives in the back (or in the side) from the drooling masses to be a bit distasteful.

Having said that, I remember when fans were chanting "Stay" for Frank Anderson to not take the OSU job.

I don't see how anyone stays at Texas in a coaching position under those conditions.

I hope he takes a head coaching job somewhere else.

Tommy!

After this past year and the struggles of the offense the past two years this isnt unexpected. That said a well deserved round of thanks to Tommy for so many years and best wishes. Why couldnt this have been termed a retirement, he is 63 so this maybe could have been handled a lot better.

I did the math and Tommy has enough years of service to retire at least $85,000 per year. The fact that his contract is not being renewed will not affect his ability to retire, he’s done his state service and is entitled to his retirement as a matter of right. If he were to get hired on at another State of Texas college he could choose to continue to contribute to his ERS account or retire, draw monthly retirement and a new state salary.

Tommy has served loyally and I assumed he was given the opportunity to retire instead of having it announced that his contract was not going to be renewed.

I did understand that some kind of a change was needed and with only three coaches, believed that Tommy would be the one because the team has suffered without a true hitting coach for years.

I will miss Tommy and thank him for his years of loyal service.

I kind of understand how baseball scholarships work. Is there something that says you can't have more than 3 paid coaches.

I also don't get it. What advantage does Tommy get by demanding that Augie fire him, instead of calling it a retirement?

iow, why wouldn't Tommy accept a 'retirement announcement'?

$85k, when you have probably lived in the same house for more than 10 years is a lot of dough.

caveat, I don't know for a fact that Augie offered retirement, but it sure makes sense.

Maybe he thought he was being thrown under the bus to satisfy a bunch of know nothing forum aggies/armchair athletic directors.

Yes there are very strict rules on the number of paid and "unpaid" coaches.

Was he the fall guy ?

I remember one year when Aggie ex football player Gene Stallings was coaching at A&M and they had a bad season and made him fire his assistant coaches but things didn't get any better and the fired him. Much to the Aggies' chagrin he later coached Alabama to an NC.

Fall guy or not, the team has been one of the worst hitting programs in the country and he was the hitting coach and lead recruiter. New blood re: hitting instruction and approach has been long overdue. Hope Augie finds the best hitting coach in country and hires him.

The performance of our hitters the last four years is well known and the reason Tommy is not at UT anymore. For what ever reason, Tommy and the current hitters did not mesh. For small ball to be successful, you have to have contact doubles hitters like Seth Johnston, Curtis Thigpen, etc. We struck out way too much to be a successful small ball offense.

I think the football team made comparable changes/upgrades last year due to similar long-term underperformances.

Football added an extra strength and conditioning coach to counter the "soft" perception.

I predict a similar response from the Baseball program, a change in Coaching philosophy/style perhaps.

Why do decent High School hitters seem to regress when they get here? It's inexplicable.

A major problem we have is that true power hitters are not coming to U. T. They don't like our ballpark with its outfield fences somewhere in the next county.
