Puffer

Heard on the radio (1530) this morning the coaches are issuing a Hard Hat Award to the player who makes the best/biggest hit in practice. The cool thing is they earn a starting spot the next day in practice. So far Bobino, Wells, and C. Scott have won it.

rewarding aggressive/intense play, i like it.

I will be curious to see if Muschamp buys into the little soccer theory of every kid gets a trophy. I hope he tells MB that he's giving out only two or three awards and tough **** for those who don't get one.

Awesome to hear about this.

Great to hear that Wells and Scott were two of the winners so far and hopefully this will help them both into starting jobs this year.

Champ Bailey of the Broncos comes to mind, arguly the best and certainly one of the best corners in the league. I don't recally many times where he really blew someone up, but many that guy is money when it comes to making a sure tackle, even one on one in the open field. He's as smart of a player as I've ever seen.

Making big hits is usually necessary to make a good tackle. Simple physics says that stopping or reversing a player's momentum makes it easier to stop him.
Also, physical hits on opposing players, especially QB's and Wide Receivers, does a lot for the mental aspect of the game. Against teams like Tech that are always throwing short passes it pays huge dividends to make punishing hits that make those players anxious about catching more passes.
I can't believe I'm explaining this, doe people actually believe that hitting really hard is not highly valued in football?

Seriously, WTF is up with the simpering tone of "well....it's has to be a sure tackle"?? I don't know of a better tackle than one where you put the opposing player on his ***. Like another poster said they are not exclusive to one another.

I think this new Philosophy he bring is good. People are right though, sure tackling is also key.

However, I believe that a sure tackle is usually a hard solid tackle. The new Philosophy has players moving and thinking. I think it is a good motivator, and that the upside of it will negate any possible downside.

"It’s something new. I wasn’t prepared for it. He is my fourth coach. All of them are something new. He’s very intense, but we need it, so I’m happy that he’s doing it. We’re getting better. Players are feeding off of it. You can see it in film – we’re striking, running to the ball more, the team’s coming more together." Bobino

"Coming in I wasn’t a very aggressive player. He told me that has to change for me to get on the field." Beasley

On if the hard hat is motivating the defense: "Oh it has to. If you don’t get motivated off of competition then you shouldn’t be playing this game. Just how you have to go out there every day, work hard and do your assignment, we have to go out there and make sure we don’t mess up or we won’t be out there playing." Palmer

This is my main thought; team tackling and constant pursuit are good traits to have on defense. Gang tackling is what you strive to have and I think this promotes that. How many times have I seen a guy not help tackle a player because he thought he was going down, only to see the runner get away.

That is what impressed me so much with OhioSt. in 2005. Unrelenting pursuit, even when they tackled a guy 3 more guys would pile on, and they would continue to mash our guys in the ground. It was absolute fanatical pursuit.

Man I saw this thread pop back up and checked to see who won the most recent hard hat....and I get a discussion of hitting vs. tackling...typical hornfans.
